Experience True Happiness With Meditation

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Our current busy lifestyle often results in people being stressed, burnout and depressed. What can we do to live a life that is more balanced and less stressful? One of the effective ways is through meditation. Everyone can learn and practise meditation which helps us calm our mind, overcome stress and discover inner peace. I see meditation as a form of exercise for our mind so that we can have a healthy mind which is calm and focused.

The essence of meditation is to quiet the mind. Each day thousands of thoughts race through our mind. As a result, we do not have a clear and focused mind. It’s like rough sea churning up sediments causing the water to be murky. When the sea is calm, the sediments will settle and the water will then become clear. Similarly, through meditation, we learn to calm the mind and rid ourselves of distracting thoughts so that our mind will become clear and alert. We will also feel more relaxed and refreshed. When we master meditation, we can also easily change our mind from troubled to peaceful or from negative to positive. Thus, we will become happier and feel more peaceful.

Meditation is not something that is difficult to learn. The key is to keep practising. The length of time to meditate depends on how much time you have. On a busy day, you may choose to just spend 10-15 mins meditating. If time permits, you can always try to meditate for longer period of up to an hour.

Try these simple steps for a start.

* Find a quiet place so that you will not get distracted by noise.
* Sit in a comfortable position. You can choose to sit with your legs crossed or otherwise. You can also sit on the chair if you like. Try to keep your back fairly straight so that your mind will not become drowsy and you won’t feel sleepy so easily.
* Gently close your eyes and breathe naturally through your nose.
* Turn your attention to your breathing. As you inhale, notice that your stomach expands. When you exhale, notice it contracts. This movement of expansion and contraction in your stomach as you breathe is the focal point for you when you meditate. If you can’t feel much of the movement, gently place your hand over your stomach and you will be able to feel it better.

It is very common that after a short while of noting the movement of your stomach, your mind starts to wander off and you start thinking about other things. When you notice this, slowly bring your attention back to the focal point and start noting the stomach movement again. Every time when your mind goes astray, just come back to the focal point again. If you can’t concentrate, don’t worry, just keep practising. The important thing is not to be discouraged and quit after just a few tries. Be patient and continue to practise. With practise, you will realise that your concentration improves and your mind wanders off less. Keep an open mind and allow yourself time to experience the true benefits of meditation.

When our mind is peaceful, we can experience true happiness. Ask anyone if he or she wants to be happy and the answer is most definitely “of course!” So meditation is for everyone, regardless of age, race or religion. As long as we want to experience happiness and inner peace, meditation can help us achieve that.

The Art Of Silence: Meditation Techniques

Monday, March 15th, 2010

In today’s fast-paced world, many people are seeking a way to get away from it all and relax. Meditation, which is essentially a method to obtain a level of deep thought and relaxation, is one way to find inner peace and tranquility. Many people think of monks or other spiritual types sitting in crossed-leg position and reaching states of bliss when they think of mediation, but there are many ways to meditate. While there are many ways to reach a meditative state, there really are no right or wrong ways to mediate (this would defeat the purpose), only practice and finding ways that feel right for you.

Meditation is associated with many religions, but one does not need to be associated with any particular religion in order to meditate. You might want to investigate different methods, however, to find a form of mediation that feels most comfortable. One common method includes repeating a sound or word, called a mantra. Other forms of meditation involve focusing on a visual image, such as the flame of a candle or a symbol. Other meditative techniques involve breathing and physical movements, such as yoga or other breathing practices.

No matter what the method, the tools used in meditation are there to help users reach a state of mental relaxation. Many mediation techniques help you clear your mind of the constant thoughts that normally run through the mind. In reducing or eliminating these thoughts, one can reach a state of deep thought that is associated with meditation.

There are two primary approaches to meditation, which are concentrative meditation and mindfulness meditation. In concentrative meditation, the practitioner focuses on breath, an object, or a sound (mantra). In mindfulness meditation, the practitioner sits quietly and “observes” everything in the environment, including thoughts, sounds, smells, and more. In this form of meditation, the practitioner practices not reacting to the environment (both internal and external), which can lead to a greater ability to act in a non-reactive way in daily life. Both forms of meditation are useful, and one is no better than the other is. Personal preference may determine which method you choose, and you can always try both.

Both physical and mental benefits can result from meditation. This can include increased heart health through relaxation, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, and a more youthful feeling. Mental benefits can be an increased sense of well-being, decreased anxiety and depression, and emotional stability. Meditation should not be used as a cure for physical or mental ailments, however, but it can be a powerful supplement. Those with physical or mental health conditions should consult with a health care professional before beginning a mediation practice.

Meditation can be quite physical, such as with some types of yoga, or seemingly passive, such as in mindfulness types of mediation. In addition to the types of meditation, there are different stages as well. Generally speaking, in early stages of meditation, the practitioner is more aware of the practice. He or she may have difficulty concentrating on breath or not reacting to thought. With practice, this moves into a stage where one is much less aware. This is followed by a stage of bliss, which is followed by very deep sense of self, followed by an ability to reach a stage of deep stillness.

There are many resources available on meditation. Those new to the practice may opt to take part in a class or guide when beginning. Others may prefer to read up on the various options and practice on his or her own. Visit the local library for books and resources or visit a yoga or spiritual center. Meditation can be an enjoyable experience and provide balance to an otherwise hectic life.

Anxiety Attacks – Can Yoga Help Solve Your Problems With Anxiety And Stress?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Do you suffer from panic attacks or anxiety problems? If you do, you are probably looking for a method, any method to help relieve some of your suffering. Medications might help of course but many people would prefer to pass on the potential side effects and pursue other avenues of help first.

If you need to relax your body and mind, yoga might be the right tool for you. Yoga is an ancient practice that can help you achieve an inner peace you didn´t know was possible but it also provides great physical benefits as well.

Despite this image that yoga is a weird indulgence of older, hippie women, it is in fact a great way to loose weight, improve your health and achieve mental and emotional clarity and peace. There are many different ways to approach your yoga practice.

Here are some of the ways yoga is practiced:

1. as a spiritual practice

2. as a lifestyle choice

3. as physical therapy

4. as a sport

5. as a method of physical fitness and health management

However, you choose to view the practice of yoga, it will provide valuable anxiety relief. Working off stress or relaxing the mind will reduce the severity and frequency of panic attacks. The reason that worry has such a detrimental effect on us is because our body has physiological reactions to stress.

Our heart beats faster, and our breathing becomes shallower and quicker. As oxygen is cut off from our body, our blood is circulated faster to meet the response needs of our body. Unfortunately, without sufficient oxygen, the job cannot be done efficiently. As a result, blood drains away from our feet and hands to serve the core of our body and help protect us. This tingling can be a disturbing sensation. Your body´s panicked response needs to be countered with a relaxation response.

Exercise and meditation are a great way to trigger the relaxation response and release the tension from our muscles and restore the blood flow to our body and regulate our breathing. In addition, to this great benefit, yoga is a fun form of exercise that gives a surprisingly intense workout. It will tone up your legs and core and give you a greater feeling of overall health. You will also be able to improve your flexibility, something many men in particular could benefit from.

Yoga is increasingly common and can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their age, gender, fitness or flexibility level. It will provide long lasting benefits to your mind, your body and overall health. Simply finding relief from your anxiety would be enough to make this a worthwhile endeavor but to also be able to improve your health, lose some weight and increase you overall fitness, makes this a must try.

There are many ways to learn this great form of exercise and relaxation. You can always read a book or rent a video. However, due to its popularity most gyms offer yoga classes and there are yoga studios sprouting up all over the country. It is a good idea to at least take several classes in person before practicing on your own.

Yoga does require some contortions and having a teacher help you get into the positions at first and showing you how to approach them is a real help. Enjoy your yoga practice and find some physical and mental benefits!

What Is Guided Meditation?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Meditation in essence is about helping you to develop inner peace, calmness, a sense of tranquillity but also it is about helping you to grow as a person. Too often people perceive meditation as a hippy thing, or something for those marijuana smoking duds but really what meditation is about is helping you with your mind and the way your mind influences your life.

Guided meditation really involves someone guiding you through the process of meditation and helping you to achieve an outcome of some description. Most people associate meditation with simply sitting on the floor with your eyes closed going Ummm. Ummm. Which I can certainly say is not the outcome we are looking for and would in essence be totally useless.

Meditation just like anything you do must have a purpose. For example, what is the purpose of getting a job? Well essentially the purpose of getting a job is to help you gain money so that you can buy a house or car, get food to eat or go on a holiday. If you did not have a purpose for a job, why would you work? You would not!

Meditation is exactly the same. You need to have a purpose when you meditate. The purpose for meditation can be varied for example you could meditate to –

#1. Find Inner Peace
#2. To Bring About Focus
#3. To Relax
#4. To Help You Change Your State of Mind
#5. Improve Creativity and Learning
#6. Help Build Your Confidence and Self-Esteem
#7. To Focus on Self-Healing
#8. To Help Control Internal and External Pain
#9. Meditate to Overcome Your Fears

There really are unlimited reasons for why you would want to meditate. The objective of guided meditation is to help you take the right meditation path to achieve those objectives.

Choosing a Meditation Guide is really an important step you need to make. For example different meditation experts and practitioners will have different techniques and will guide you through different paths depending on what you are trying to achieve.

The majority of meditation practitioners will teach you deep breathing meditations when you first start because if you do not know how to relax and maintain focus, then the other meditation paths will certainly not work. Remember one thing, every meditation guide will be different and I recommend that before paying a meditation guide to help you, try to see if they will give you a free lesson.

What I have found in the past is that every meditation practitioner is different and I have even found the meditation practitioners from the one meditation centre can vary dramatically in the guiding process, so you need to find the guide who best works for you. Let me give an example of what I mean. I am always on the lookout for new ideas and thoughts when it comes to meditation and I recently purchased a Chakra meditation cd which included a guided meditation program. I put the cdrom into my computer and within the first five minutes of listening to it, I burst out laughing simply because the voice was digitally altered and was totally unreal. For me this guided meditation tool was never going to work as I could not take it seriously. Now for some people this particular meditation cd may have worked and they may think totally differently about the meditation cd. For me it did not work.

There are many different style of guided meditation. If you goto your local bookstore or check out the internet you will find an abundance of guided meditation cd’s, dvd’s and videos. Before you rush out and buy them, I strongly encourage you to see if there is sample of what they offer just to see if their guided meditation is what you are after. Any good quality meditation programs, will offer you some sort of limited look at their products so that you can see if they will work for you. If you are going to a health retreat or meditation centre for a guided meditation experience, find out if they offer a Free Introductory CDROM of their program. Always try these out first because there is nothing worse to go to a meditation retreat only to find out it does not suit you.

One thing I recommend to everyone is to try out meditation before you goto to any of these retreats even if you just try out the Deep Breathing Meditation exercises. Meditation does take practice and the more practice you do the better you will get at it. Some people when they first go to guided meditation programs do not get the outcomes they expect, not because the programs do not work, but simply because they do not realise it does take practice to master meditation.

A General Introduction To Meditation

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Meditation is the primary means of cultivating the inner peace and happiness that we all long for. Inner peace and happiness are found to be resident parts of our inner nature when we are able to take away the barriers in our nervous system from the purifying influences of yoga practices. Inner stillness is the essence of enlightenment, and how do we nurture this in ourselves? – Through deep meditation.

Scientific studied even found explanations to confirm some benefits of meditation. These studies point out that meditation shift the brains activity from the stress-prone part to the calmer part of the brain. This mind exercise lessens the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression. They further found out that the brain processes lesser fear due to the changes in the brains activities.

The benefits of meditation that most people find very helpful. One is, it actually releases a person from the bondage of past traumas which causes a feeling of having unfinished business, and hindering present growth. Through this, one can also enjoy the little joys that each moment brings.

Some health experts have found out that people who have been diagnosed to be suffering from too much stress and extreme anxiety need not be treated with drugs. The benefits of meditation were once again proven in the study of these people. They found out that engaging in meditation is a good panic attack prevention.

So how do you go about meditation? It is simpler than people thought it to be. You only find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, relax your emotions and concentrate on an object to meditate on. It is important to just think of a single object and concentrate on it. Some distractions like other objects will come into focus. Drive your mind away from those. They will only break your concentration. You can still hear the sound around you, but when youre deep in thought about your object of meditation, even those will not disturb you.

Daily meditation is advisable. If you have a strong commitment and conviction for it, you will achieve a very unique feeling of being able to leave the moment. People who have been through this will tell you that it is a feeling of utter bliss where the mind is clear and clean.

Overall meditation is often cheaper than a other forms of relaxation. If you use tools like CDs or cassettes or if you ask the help of a friend to guide you, it wouldnt cost you as much as a private session would. Though, these private sessions are considered as meditations as well. Meditation can make you understand the basics of meditation more clearly. It can help you get rid of all distractions and meditate more effectively. Most of the meditation has particular goals, from physical healing to spiritual-related goals. While meditation may be used to achieve healing, the guides are not the healers though. Your naturally healthy state is just being restored through the flow of energy freed by your meditation.
