Yoga – Benefits For Body And Mind

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Yoga is, basically, a series of ancient practices that started in India. Since its beginnings and regardless of what branch of yoga is involved, the final purpose of yoga refers to achieving freedom from worldly pain as well as reaching an ongoing cycle of life and death. However, it has obviously shifted its sense of mainly being a spiritual practice through its widespread popularity and with the help of a yogi anybody has access to the health benefits and relaxation that yoga offers.

This is probably one of the best options nowadays in terms of relaxation for people with a stressful schedule. Yoga does, however, require that you perceive it seriously and rigorously. First of all, there’s more to it than people in spandex you see on TV in complicated, twisted positions. It’s a demanding process that’s linked to more than a single aspect of one’s lifestyle. It requires a lot of discipline and commitment. However, if you decide to take the yogi’s advice and realize the implications of yoga as to a safe diet, mental relaxation and so on and so forth, you’ll surely make the best of the health benefits it has to offer. In any case, remember to undertake plenty of documentation and explore all possible means of informing yourself before jumping to any conclusions and deciding in favor of one yoga style or another.

However, nothing is more appreciated like the actual health benefits which yoga can bring a person. The key element here is stress. A lot of the common diseases are somehow related to nervous tension and practicing yoga deals with the problem from its very core. Needless to say, on the long term, it also helps with illnesses that are not necessarily related to it, such as spine issues. Still, it’s advisable that you make use of yoga as an alternative treatment, instead of relying on it exclusively.

Health benefits stretch, though, further than the everyday use of the term. It’s also a matter of mental health and within mere weeks of rigorous yoga you’ll be able to see results regarding your life quality you never thought of.

If your interest in yoga has already been aroused, you should also consider Pilates. It’s more of an alternative form of yoga based on nearly the same principles, but the main difference is that it’s much newer. Pilates was developed by a German athlete somewhere around 80 years ago, while yoga is a thousand year old Indian practice with connections in religion and spirituality. They work differently for each individual, so do some research and ask for the advice of an expert.

There are several yoga practices destined to result in health benefits for a more specific range of individuals. For example, during pregnancy, it can ease pain in different parts of the body and even contribute to efficient nourishing of the fetus, as well as deal with anxiety and accomplish a great improvement in your general mood. It can also be an important step in healing mild depressions.

Few things are as rewarding and relaxing as yoga. With numerous health benefits, it’s accessible to nearly anyone willing to dedicate themselves to this ancient Indian practice. General improvements in body flexibility, concentration and performance won’t fail to appear.

Using Meditation For Colitis Symptoms

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Those diagnosed with colitis should be aware of and utilise available methods and practices to reduce the occurrence and strength of colitis symptoms, particularly when it can be identified that stress has been a contributory factor. One stress reducing method that should be considered is meditation as it is easy to implement and has wider health benefits.

The exercise of meditation is in reference to the specific state where both the body and mind are conscious, yet are relaxed and focused. The purpose is to achieve a state of both physical and mental calmness to purposely remove stressful, negative thoughts and influences and calming the state of the mind. In a sense it cleanses the mind and allows the uninterrupted focus on one particular thought. Some people require total silence in order to achieve this mental state where all sounds, however small are required to be blocked out. Often this can be very difficult to achieve yet with practice, the mind can be trained to close out any background noise.

In order to undertake effective meditation, you require adopting a comfortable position though it does not have to be the stereotypical straight backed cross leg pose associated with meditation. As long as you are relaxed and comfortable, the mind will be able to focus more easily. Additionally, there is associated with meditation some ritualistic humming. This is used as a means of concentration, to help the person with the same aim of focusing the mind. Again it is not essential that such an action is adhered to. People will have different methods of focusing though just ensure such methods achieve an intense focused state of mind.

For colitis sufferers, stress can often bring about symptoms and any method to reduce this by creating both physical and mental calmness should be utilised. The process of meditation creates this very state with the added bonus of the requirement to focus on one object. The large colon can be the sole object of this focus. While doing this you should be aware of any tension within the large colon and on your body as a whole. Now mentally visualise the release of this tension. Start to imagine the inflammation reducing as the stress and tension floats away. You should feel the release of this and you should find yourself in a refreshed state when your session has ended.

If this action can be incorporated into a daily routine, this will not only be rejuvenating for your mind and body but may also reduce the likelihood of colitis symptoms appearing due to a build up of stress that has no mechanism of release. This should be used as part of effective management to reduce the impact that colitis has yet it is only one method for the reduction of stress in colitis sufferers.

Here is your opportunity to source the real life practical answers to make your daily colitis experience easier by discovering revelations from someone who has actually experienced it. Colitis can be a battle. Are you sure you are doing everything to defend yourself effectively? The real everyday answers to everyday colitis problems. By a survivor. Can your doctor provide that? www.thecolitisexperience.com

Yoga Is Fake?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Stop! Stop following others blindly in doing Yoga. Do you know that it may kill you?

It seems to me that Yoga can solve every single health issue. There is no doubt that everybody is doing Yoga these days, and in some places, there even run some Yoga for pets. That sounds a nit ridiculous to me but anything can happens…

This does not surprise me as Yoga does give lots of health benefits. Yoga is considered by a lot of people that gives us the regeneration capabilities to live healthily amidst hectic schedules and bustling environments.

There are truths in all these, only if you understand the dangers and pitfalls of Yoga and the true secrets of learning Yoga in the correct order!

When you hear somebody saying that so and so does the wrong Yoga, it could be true. Right way of learning Yoga energises you and makes you look fresh. Miscarriage can be caused by Yoga if you are not careful

I do not even know who came up with the phrase “no pain no gain”, and being a Yoga teacher myself, that statement does not and should not be applied to Yoga practise. A lot of Yoga teachers are going to tell you that it is perfectly alright to feel pains because you need to practise more? As a matter of fact a real Yogis practitioner, will tell you that there is no such thing as “no pain no gain”. The true essence of Yoga is about reunion with God. That is the truemeaning of Yoga whether you know it or not.

You have to be sensitive enough to your body as when it ask you to stop because of pains, you must to.. Warm-up exercises are a must-do, if you want your body to feel comfortable doing Yoga..There is no point hurting yourself if your body keeps screaming at you that it can no longer take it anymore.

It is even more dangerous to you if you experience illness like insomnia, neck ache, or during your menstruating period. While you are having babies, be careful when you try to do full boat postion. This Yoga Full boat postion requires you to be able to balance on the tripod of your sitting bones and tailbone.

If you suffer from the neck injury, try to stop doing bridge pose for now. Bridge position although calms the brains and rejuvenates tired legs, it requires you to lie on the back of your head on the floor with your chest bending upwards and hence giving a lot of strains on your neck!

When you have the knee injury, be cautious while doing head-to-knee forward bend because you are required to bend your knees while bending forward with your head touching on of your ankles…

Remember alright, Please do not continue if your knees hurt. It means something is not right!

You need to stay away from downward-facing-dog position, when you are in the late stages of pregnancy. Use cautions doing this position when you experience high blood pressure! You are required to come onto the floor on your hands and knees while setting your knees directly below your hips and your hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Moreover you need to Spread your palms, index fingers parallel or slightly turned out, and turn your toes under.

I can tell you that it is not worth it to even try to put yourself and your conceived baby in the dangerous position if you must stop Yoga.

When you suffer from high blood pressure, be careful while doing the tree pose. If you raise your arms above your head it may make your high-blood pressure worse

There are a lot of other pitfalls that I can go on, but the point is Yoga can be dangerousif you do not know the secret! There is always a right and wrong way in doing anything, including Yoga! When you think you know it all, then you might as well stop learning?

The best teacher for any exercise that you do, including Yoga is your body signal!

Learn Meditation In 7 Amazingly Easy Steps

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

While meditation is an important spiritual element of major religions like Buddhism and Hinduism, it’s used every day by millions of people who meditate purely for it’s health benefits. Western medicine recognizes mediation’s positive, calming effects, with doctors advising patients who suffer from stress, high blood pressure and chromic pain to take a few relaxing minutes each day to meditate.

It’s like a trip to the gym for your brain – by focusing the mind on a single thought or image, even for only 10 or 20 minutes each day, you’re body relaxes, our mind becomes clear, and stressful problems become easier to manage.

Why meditation has a measurable effect on mind and body

To understand how meditation works, it helps to understand how the brain functions. The largest part of the brain is the cortex, divided into left and right hemispheres. The left side of the brain is usually dominant, controlling speech, logic, calculation and writing. The right hemisphere controls creativity, imagination and emotions. Researchers believe that when we meditate we create a connection between the two hemispheres. When subjects hooked up to ECG machines meditate, researchers can measure the intensity of alpha waves – the brain waves when we’re in calm, relaxed state – produced while meditating. During meditation, alpha waves are far stronger and more consistent between both hemispheres that during other forms of relaxation – even sleep.

When the brain is in an alpha state, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over – the part of the nervous system that conserves and restores energy, slows blood pressure and heart rate, and controls the digestion and absorption of nutrients by the body. When the parasympathetic nervous system takes over, the high-stress “fight-or-flight” response – which is accompanied by secretion of stress hormones like adrenaline, plus tension in the head, neck and lower back – is overruled, and the body releases other, more positive hormones that promote relaxation and healing.

Proof that meditation works

Medical researchers have done a great deal of study into the benefits of meditation. Studies show it encourages better brain function, improved circulation in the extremities, increased cerebral blood flow and lower levels of stress hormones. A 1987 found that people who practiced Transcendental Meditation – on where subjects used focused breathing and a repeated mantra, or sound) made less than half the number of visits to doctors and spent 50 percent less time in hospitals than people who didn’t meditate. than those who did not.

There are countless ways to meditate, and you can teach yourself how to do it from, books, tapes, or via the Internet in a very short time. There are often classes available at local community centers, holistic health centers and even community colleges, as well. Among the most popular methods of meditation are:

Mantra meditation: A word or phrase – your mantra – is repeated over and over, either out loud or in your head. You can choose a phrase that relates to your personal beliefs, one that’s a positive statement, or a one-syllable word-sound like “om” or “eng.”

Breath awareness: You concentrate on rhythmic breathing, possibly counting each breath in and out, often breathing in through the nose and out the mouth.

Object meditation: You focus on a specific object, noting each detail of its shape, presence and color.

Active meditations: Using rhythmic movements, like walking, swimming, t’ai chi or yoga to focus the mind.

A simple, 7-step meditation anyone can do

1. Set aside 10 to 20 minutes, once or twice a day.

2. Find a place that’s quiet where you are unlikely to be disturbed, and sit down. You don;t need to sit cross-legged, or in any special posture – a comfortable chair is fine. Wear comfortable clothes, and arrange your arms and legs in a relaxed posture.

3. Set an alarm so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of time. If you’re concerned that it may startle you, place it in another room or under a cushion, so the sound will be muffled but audible.

4. Breathe slowly and rhythmically, consciously relaxing your feet, legs, torso, on up your body until all your muscles are loose.

5. Choose a word to repeat to yourself. The classic mantra is “Om,” the Sanskrit word for perfection. Or you could choose a simple word that reflects what you hope to achieve in your life, like “calm,” “happiness” or “energy.” You could also, instead, count your breaths from one to 10, then over again and again. If thoughts drift into your mind, allow them to float gently out again as you re-focus on your word or breathing.

6. When your alarm sounds and you’ve finished, don’t jump right up – allow yourself to slowly open your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and rejoin the world in a relaxed manner.

7. Stretch your arms and legs, and stand up slowly.

Most people who start meditation find they have trouble motivating themselves to meditate, and letting go of the Western tendency to constantly think, think, think about every little thing. This is one reason why you might consider taking a class or using tapes – in can be valuable to have a guide to take you through meditation your first few times. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find meditation is simple and effective – and you can move on to more advanced techniques as you find yourself progressing.

Health Benefits Of Yoga Exercise

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Yoga studios are springing up in many cities all over the world to cater to the demand by yoga beginners in the midst of the current economic downturn that is characterized by daily stress, fatigue and pollution. More and more people are taking up yoga classes to seek that elusive sense of relaxation, comfort and inward consciousness. It has provided them with a refuge away from the daily confusion and yielded benefits useful to their practical daily lives.

The benefits of yoga is that it is therapeutic both physically and mentally and it conditions the mind and body. Hatha yoga which is very popular in the west, for example, conditions the muscle joints making them flexible, tones the muscles, strengthens the spine, eases back pain, correct body postures, creates balance, improves overall fitness and health, increases circulation, strengthens the heart, reduces blood sugar levels and cholesterol and assists in weight loss.

It also creates balance and relaxes the mind and body, by freeing the spirit and sharpens mental concentration and awareness. Hatha yoga is known to relieve the symptoms of illnesses such as arthritis, diabetes, asthma, obesity, fatigue, arteriosclerosis and prolongs youthfulness. No wonder then that yoga is becoming a popular activity to help solve modern day illnesses and problems.

In practicing yoga, practitioners will attain a sense of centeredness, grace and coordination. The different postures in yoga heals and invigorates the body as it stretches and tones the muscles and joints and improving blood circulation and oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. Yoga postures involves every muscle of the body and challenges them in a passive way, creating resistance by moving the body’s centre of gravity. The quality of yoga postures and strengthening of the muscles brings relaxation and refreshes the body and mind.

Unlike other forms of exercise like aerobics or jogging, yoga when done correctly does not cause any strain or injury and has no negative effects. For beginners, it is recommended that the presence and direction of a qualified yoga teacher is sought before fully practicing yoga on one’s own.

Yoga is suitable for people of all ages, including children. It helps to develop self-discipline and improves a person’s physical and mental health. It also improves memory and concentration through breathing exercises, and for young people it enables them to keep their natural flexibility for years. The benefits that the practice of yoga provides far outweigh the time and effort that practitioners put in their daily routine.

Neuroscientist Proves Health Benefits Of Meditation

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Neuroscientist Dr Shanida Nataraja has just published The Blissful Brain: Neuroscience and Proof of the Power of Meditation, a thought-provoking science book that proves meditation can improve your concentration, memory and decision-making skills.

Dr Nataraja was first exposed to meditation by her parents, who meditated regularly. She explains: “I was raised in a family where meditation was a central part of life. My father is Indian, from a Hindu background, and my mother is Dutch and Catholic.” However, it wasn’t until she became a research scientist that she decided to investigate whether her parent’s activity actually worked.

Dr Nataraja was surprised at the findings of her studies, she said: “I really didn’t expect to find that meditation plays such a role in optimising brain function and health, from cognitive abilities to cardiovascular wellbeing.” She found that meditation was beneficial to the brain because it boosted brain integration.

Dr Nataraja believes brain integration is important, as she thinks that westerners use the left halves of their brains too much. She explains, “Generally speaking, the left hemisphere is associated with analytical, rational and logical processing, whereas the right hemisphere is associated with abstract thought, non-verbal awareness, visual-spatial perception and the expression and modulation of emotions. In the western world, most individuals navigate through their everyday life in a fashion dominated by left-brained thinking.” Relying too heavily on the left hand side of the brain can cause people to think too much, while not feeling enough. This can cause stress and anxiety, as well as making people feel overwhelmed.

Dr Nataraja’s research used galvanic skin response meters to monitor emotional changes through the skin and electroencephalograms (EEGs), which measured the amount of electrical activity that was being produced by the brain. Her work demonstrated that entering a meditative state could bring a feeling of calmness, prompted by a much-needed increase in use of the right side of the brain. Her studies also showed an increased level of alpha brain wave activity, which indicated that meditation also activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This activation of this nervous system is important as it lowers stress levels, which decreases pressure on your heart.

Although she proves that there are numerous health benefits offered by meditation, Dr Nataraja also realises that it can be difficult to reach the meditative state in today’s busy world. However, she advises people to take a 15-minute break at the start and finish of every day for quiet reflection, which has a calming effect and can help to relieve some of the pressure of modern life.

Dr Nataraja champions a number of alternative therapy methods to reach the meditative state. She said: “I also do yoga two or three times a week; it took me a long time to find a type of meditation that suited me. I’ve tried tai chi, chi gung and other approaches, but yoga really works for me with its very specific point of mindful focus on the postures.”

Improve Your Life With Yoga Instruction

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Yoga instruction can be the first step in changing and improving your life and creating a whole new you. When one comes to the decision that they are in need of a real life change, there are many ways to accomplish this, but few will be as beneficial as Yoga.
Yoga is a means in which you can improve yourself mentally, emotionally, spiritually as well as improving your physical body. The benefits of Yoga are immense; you will become stronger, healthier and feel better about yourself when you commit yourself to Yoga instruction.

The health benefits alone are enough to get many people started with yoga instruction, but there are many reasons why yoga can help you to change your life for the better. Yoga is a type of all in one approach to life change, though alone it cannot work miracles to help better your life, it can be a great foundation for a start.

Aside from health, there are other ways in which yoga instruction can help to improve your life.
It could help you to earn more money. Yoga can provide you with the ability to manage stress, and this alone can assist you in the workplace, but it can also aid you in your concentration skills. The better you can concentrate, the more you can get accomplished.
Another advantage of learning Yoga is increased energy. Many people claim that they begin to feel more refreshed and energized after they begin practicing Yoga. This translates into more energy to devote to your interests, as well as family and friends. There is little doubt that our loved ones and those things that absorb our interest is what really make life worth living. Imagine a life in which only a small portion of your energy and thoughts are used for work, and the rest is saved for what is most important to us. This alone could help change your life for the better.

Coping with depression is another area in which Yoga can be of use. Yoga postures are designed to stretch, compress and massage your internal organs and glands. This stimulation is thought to help balance hormone levels in the body, which can help to attain a more balanced emotional condition.
Maybe you would like to stop smoking, or conquer some other habit that may be harming you. Yoga will increase your motivation, energy and focus, which will aid you in changing whatever habit you set out to change.
Yoga instruction can truly be beneficial for those who are looking to make some meaningful life changes.
