Yoga, the ancient Indian practice of meditation and exercise is now widely practiced the world over. Many get into yoga because of the benefits that they can get from it. The practice started out in India but is now a strong influence all over the world. It’s common to see people who practice yoga and even use yoga props for their poses.

It seems that for many people yoga is simply all about stretching. The truth is it is one of the best exercises that does not only improve flexibility but also strengthens and works out all the muscles in the body. There are actually two facets involved in yoga. One is the yoga pose and the other is the yoga lifestyle.

Yoga pose is all about the exercises that you do in a yoga class. Aside from stretching your limbs, you also exercise your breathing. The good thing about yoga is that you can do it anywhere. Props like yoga blocks could even aid you while you do your yoga poses even if you are by yourself. Sometimes, you’ll need the assistance of another person to do your poses, but with the help of props you can do it by yourself. Props also provide support for beginners and even experts who want to do more difficult poses.

The yoga lifestyle on the other hand goes beyond the exercises. It involves a change in your way of life. One of the most important things to change is diet. For many, it can be a total diet overhaul since we’re so used to meat and fast food. Yet all of these things are done not only for physical wellness but for mental and spiritual nourishment as well.

If you want to do yoga, you can enroll in some of the yoga classes offered in your place. You can also try home videos and by some useful equipment to help you with your poses. For instance you can start with the yoga block that helps you with proper alignment and improves your balance.

If done regularly, yoga can have remarkably positive effects on your health and well being. If you want to get started with yoga or want to buy yoga props etc, check this out. : yoga blocks

Beginning Maternity Yoga

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

Since way back when, men and women of every age group and walks of life have practiced yoga. While the normal yoga master is often rather slim and unbelievably flexible, it doesn’t mean you should be in that type of shape to have the ability to reap the benefits of yoga.  As a matter of inescapable fact, practicing yoga is one of many ways that one could work on getting yourself into that kind of shape yourself. It matters not if you’re tall or short, thin or thick, or possibly pretty out of shape, yoga will help you find new energy and flexibility you may not have ever known you could have.

Meaning you don’t have to be fit to practice yoga. Since it has little impact and should always be performed in such a manner that it does not cause your body pain, it is typically harmless for just about anyone, even people that have medical and health factors. For that reason, it could be one of the best things that can be done from a fitness standpoint throughout maternity.

During your pregnancy is essential that you keep your muscles in excellent condition for delivery, together with your lung capacity. It clearly doesn’t hurt to be as relaxed as possible also. Pregnant yoga is great for this. If you are having a typical and healthful pregnancy, yoga is probably an excellent choice for you to accomplish all of these things. Take into account, however, if you’re experiencing complications with your pregnancy, you might think about talking to your personal doctor prior to starting or continuing to practice yoga.

You’ll want to do a bit of research into the yoga poses before beginning yoga that are most suitable during maternity, as there are unique conditions that occur based on which month of your pregnancy you are actually in. Certain poses need to be avoided at certain times during your pregnancy, while some will certainly help to enhance and loosen up the muscles that you are going to count on during birth. The more you learn about yoga before you begin the better off you will be.

Yoga will also enable you to build up your lung capacity which can be very beneficial considering how much less lung capacity you have as your diaphragm expands outward. In addition there are poses that you and your spouse can perform together when you are less able to do more intimate things.

Although there are not a lot of books available about maternity yoga practice, the few that are out there are excellent resources to draw from. But you may very well find everything you need to know to do some basic yoga practice during your pregnancy online. But yoga is regarded by many to be one of the few exceptional options to keep and even boost your health and conditioning during pregnancy.

Yoga Straps – Having A Grip On Correct Yoga

Friday, July 16th, 2010

As we all know Yoga can be completely accurate and possible for everyone if the necessary things like mats, clothes, pillows, straps and many more are around. It makes your pose very much easy and everyone can practice that without any hassle. In olden times there may not be such straps or balls but they use to improvise it by using some other material which can be used in the place of the actual brick and strap.

By having yoga strap by your side you can attain the flexibility factor which may be missing in your body structure. Or due to some medical condition some asanas cannot be performed, but with this strap and other accessories yoga have become very easy. Thus it has made itself very easy and popular which is the main factor of spreading the knowledge about yoga to everyone in the world.

The straps used come in different sizes and can be modified according to the person’s usage. This helps in holding the pose for a longer period which is the main essence of doing any kind of yoga. It helps in increasing flexibility and your concentration level. These are very sturdy and come in two buckle style on cotton webbing. These buckles are either D-ring buckles or plastic cinch buckles. The buckles are adjustable and are very useful for getting your yoga positions right.

These yoga straps can be used in all levels of yoga. The harder the level the more is the use of the straps. Some of the most challenging yoga poses can be achieved by the straps provided and by holding them longer. The straps help you in achieving some of the hardest level of yoga asanas which makes all the stretch worthwhile and helpful.

Pregnancy Yoga, The Benefits

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Yoga is an ancient Indian practice dating back five thousand years. The word itself comes from the ancient Sanskrit word for “union”.The benefits of regular yoga practice are many. Chief benefits include relaxation, normalization of body weight, improved balance, improved flexibility and muscle tone and increased energy.

People often ask if yoga is appropriate during pregnancy. As long as simple precautions and common sense are followed, prenatal yoga is a fantastic way of staying fit during your pregnancy and will help prepare you for labor.

Probably the most important aspect of Yoga is management of the breath. Few us breathe properly today, we are very uptight and constricted as a rule and tend to breathe from our chests. If you look at a sleeping baby, you will see her tummy rise and fall – this is where we have forgotten to breathe from. Yoga breathing fixes this, thereby relieving tension and ensuring that oxygen rich blood is circulating in your body which is obviously very beneficial for your baby. Yoga breathing can also make your labor much more manageable. When my wife was in labor with our daughter, she employed the yoga breathing techniques she learned months before and had the baby without any drugs and without even gas or air.

As with any physical exercise, you need to take general precautions when you are pregnant. Any poses that mean lying on your back for extended periods should be avoided. Unless you are accustomed to inversion postures, you should not practice them while pregnant. Deep forward or back bends may also not be appropriate, as they may put too much strain on the abdominal muscles. As with everything associated with pregnancy, listen to your body at all times and do not push yourself. You should finish a yoga session in a state of deep relaxation, not heading for the freezer to get an ice pack!

As your body changes in each trimester, you will want to adapt your yoga practice accordingly. In the first trimester, it will likely be possible to perform poses that involve deeper stretching. Standing postures are very beneficial as they will strengthen your legs and improve your circulation. Spine twisting postures may also be practiced. In the second and third trimesters you may want to look ato postures that will help open your hips, for example, Triangle Posture. At this point you should take with your back and forward bends. At all times listen to your body and focus on your breath – this cannot be overstated. As soon as you are not breathing slowly and evenly in any posture you have lost the pose and are not getting any benefits. Back off until your breath returns to normal. Yoga is not about how deep you go, someone in the full expression of the posture will be getting just the same benefits as someone who is only in the first 5 percent of a pose but is working up to their limit.

There are lots of resources that can help you embark on a safe prenatal yoga program from DVDs to books to online articles. With their help you can find a practice that is right for you and your baby.

Patrick Attlee practices yoga regularly and has been writing on the subject for over 5 years. You can find out more about pregnancy yoga at www.pregnancy-yoga.com

Going For Free Online Yoga Programs

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Now, there are lots of free online yoga programs you can join. They are especially beneficial to newbies who would like to learn the basics of yoga and find out if you truly want to get into this sport. Not all free instructions can be helpful though. There are some crucial points that you should look into before joining.

What You Can Benefit from Yoga

First of all, it is important to understand why yoga is worth your time and effort. Yoga has a great many benefits. It improves your physical strength and flexibility and keeps your organs and systems functioning properly. It also calms and relaxes you and relieves pain and stress. In the end, yoga ultimately leads people to physical, mental and spiritual harmony. In other words, yoga can help you achieve overall health and change the way you respond to life situations and conditions.

Free Online Yoga Instructions

The usual idea we have with yoga is that students have to sit in front of teachers who demonstrate yoga techniques. You can actually enjoy this same kind of instruction for free online. Some yoga websites will let their users or members watch actual demonstration videos online. Users then just have to follow instructions to get the right way of performing a technique. In some cases, some individuals may prefer written and illustrated instructions from web pages or free newsletters.

Different Kinds of Yoga

You can not just pick and use any free online yoga material. You have to find out first which kind of yoga you are most comfortable with. You may for example prefer Hatha yoga over Ashtanga yoga or Kundalini yoga over Bikram yoga. Different forms or kinds of yoga will teach you different techniques.

Different free materials may also be for different levels of learners. If you are a beginner, you should look for instructions that are specifically made for those who have never experienced yoga before. You should also consider your own personal goals. You may just want an introduction to yoga or you might want to get into more in-depth free yoga instruction that ultimately leads to a higher level of yoga practice.

Your Instructors

Just as there are different yoga disciplines, there are also a great number of yoga masters. This is especially true online. Since authenticity is a little difficult to check on the internet, some scam artists may even pose as yoga masters. Do a little research on where exactly your free material comes from. This can protect you from injury and help you achieve the goal of yoga better.

Self-Motivation

You may be looking at a real master execute some great yoga moves but he is not looking at you. This means that you have to monitor yourself to be certain that you are being serious and careful in performing yoga techniques. You also have to be sure that you know how to follow instructions. You might be the type of student who cannot learn well without actual classroom instruction.

Now that you know what to consider with free online yoga instructions, you can go ahead and pick a right one for you. Make sure, though, that you have enough enthusiasm and will be persistent in learning. That way, you can truly benefit what yoga exercise can bring you.

The Top Five Benefits Of Yoga Exercise

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Yoga has been practiced by people the world over for many centuries, and it is still very popular today. Many people use it to strengthen the mind, body and spirit connection. There are actually several forms of yoga, and a seemingly infinite array of poses and postures that can be used. But however you choose to make use of yoga exercise, here are the top five benefits of including yoga in your home fitness routine.

1. Yoga not only strengthens your muscles but also increases their flexibility. Many people today use weight training to help build larger more powerful muscles. However, short and powerful muscles can be prone to injury. And flexibility is often ignored in many workout routines. Yoga can help round out your workout schedule, not only strengthening the muscles of your body but also making them flexible enough to protect you from injury as you exercise.

2. Yoga also helps increase your energy level. There is an emphasis on increasing the oxygen level in your blood while doing yoga exercises, and that in turn leads to a more energetic overall feeling. And because of the increased flexibility that yoga brings, there is a tendency to move more anyway because there is a wider range of free movement available in the body. And staying active also leads to higher energy levels as well.

3. Yoga also stimulates endocrine gland function by utilizing twisting and bending poses that activate the endocrine system and helps normalize sluggish glands.

4. One of the most popular benefits of yoga exercises is that it not only strengthens and improves your physical condition, but also helps relieve stress and tension to improve your mental outlook too. Today’s society is fast-paced and hectic, and this can take its toll on one both physically and mentally. Yoga recognizes this, and many of the slow stretching movements and deep breathing that is part of most yoga exercises help clear your mind of the cares of the day and focus it on positive things instead.

5. Closely related to your mood and mental outlook are other psychological benefits of using yoga. Very often we carry negative messages and feelings inside, and the practice of yoga helps a person better tune into the person that they are inside, increasing self awareness and self esteem.

There are lots of other advantages and benefits of adding yoga exercise into your fitness workouts, including the fact that it is both inexpensive and relatively easy to do. You may find by incorporating yoga into your daily routine, that even more benefits become readily apparent. This is fine because yoga is a deeply personal experience. It is not necessarily the same for each person who practices it. But hopefully the benefits of yoga exercise that we have covered in this article will help convince you that it should be a major part of your daily fitness routine from now on.

Yoga-your Path To Peace With Food

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Last May I had to opportunity to go to a conference in Florida with other health care providers from around the country. We were working together because of our common interest in finding ways to treat the obesity epidemic. We talked about many topics, including our children, the work we were doing, how some of us loved doing yoga, and, of course, food. Being the only nutritionist in the group, the conversation eventually turned, as it often does, to dieting and weight control.

Several of the women had been on and off Weight Watchers for years. It is a terrific program and the women liked going to the meeting for the support and encouragement, as well as the flexibility and difference food choices they can make. One woman’s story really struck me:

She told us she had once lost 40 on the program, and during this time was regularly attending yoga classes. She also found herself able to get into the meditative practices of yoga, which are quite difficult to attain. She also enjoyed practicing many of the postures, or asanas. More importantly, I heard her saying that during this period of time in her life, she felt so good about herself that she had no problem driving past fast food places-she felt absolutely no desire to stop and get something to eat. She sounded as though this was a very peaceful time for her, not just with her weight, but in her life.

Unfortunately, as often happens, the woman eventually gained back all of the weight (along with a few additional pounds) and she stopped practicing yoga. I found the combination of the two (practicing yoga and losing weight) quite interesting and I spoke to her about this. My advice to her was to worry less about the “food” part and think more about putting the yoga back into her life. Most of us understand exactly what it means to “eat healthy” in order to lose weight. Folks who have been to Weight Watchers are well-educated as to the various acceptable choices they can make, and which foods they can prepare. The woman admitted she did already knew all of this.

I suggested that she focus on rebuilding time for yoga first. The meditation, the postures, and the different yoga sequences would make her feel at peace with her body. Yoga always gives me a sense that, regardless of my weight, I can feel good in my body. Yoga is not just about being flexible in your body. It’s about increasing flexibility, building strength and endurance, physically AND emotionally.

I just know that as soon as this woman begins practicing yoga again, she will be able to permanently lose the weight. Not focusing on food while focusing on increasing activity improves one’s overall health and well-being.

Being at peace with your body enables you to become at peace with food so much more easily!

A Yoga Workout Will Help You Lose Weight

Monday, May 10th, 2010

A Yoga workout will help you lose weight and that is important to know if you are working on an exercise program or starting one. Flexibility and reducing stress are major priorities and one of the best ways to begin being flexible, help lose weight and reduce stress is Yoga.

If you are like me then you may be thinking like I did when I first heard about Yoga and wondering how you are going to bend over backwards or end up looking like a pretzel with a head attached to it. It wasn’t until I tried a very basic routine that I discovered how great Yoga makes me feel. The stretching is a bit difficult at first but you feel so relaxed at the end of a session that you end up wanting to continue learning and remaining consistent with your workouts.

Yoga comes from the East and it is a name for a group of stretching and breathing exercises that can have a tremendous positive effect on your mind and body. You do not need any special equipment except for a mat or a place to work where you will not slip as you move along the exercises. I highly recommend investing a small amount of money for Yoga blocks because the will help you when you have to stretch. A good Yoga kit should not cost you more than twenty dollars and it will include a mat, 2 blocks and a stretching band.

There are many ways that you can learn how to practice. If you enjoy working out in your home then you can buy a book or you can use a DVD to learn how to perform Yoga. You will be able to mimic the moves as well as understand the proper breathing techniques by listening to the instructor. It is very helpful to watch it a few times before you begin to make sure that you are comfortable before attempting the moves because once you begin, you will take your cues from the audio instruction and not the visual since you will be looking up, down or away from the screen. (This took me a few tapes to figure out.) Also, if you belong to a health club, many of them offer Yoga classes and this will help you learn because you will be able to see firsthand what you are supposed to be doing and if the class is small enough, the instructor may be able to correct your posture when you are not getting it right. There are plenty of independent Yoga instructors in most areas but it can be a bit pricey at 10-20 dollars per lesson or about $100 per month for an unlimited membership.

As you progress through your diet and exercise plan, I want you to seriously consider giving Yoga a try. Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years and will continue to be used by people for their health and harmony.
