What Is Yoga?

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

Copyright 2006 Douglas Alp

Even more disconcerting, a stereotype does exist in places where the term yoga is synonymous with cult, or some kind of archaic spiritual belief that compels one to quit their job, sell their house, and go live in the middle of nowhere.

One of the physical benefits you will experience is increased flexibility. As most people know Yoga consist on many movements, stretches and poses which act on various joints in your body. Many of these joints are joints that are rarely used. So the stretching and use of these joints, ligament and tendons help to increase your flexibility. These movements also provide flexibility to the supporting joints, ligament and tendons.Yoga provides massage to all your organs and glands including the prostate which never gets external stimulation. The gent stretching of your muscles and joints when doing yoga maximizes blood flow in your body enabling your body to flush toxins, provide nourishment to your body and in turn slows aging and increases energy.

By stretching and using muscles to hold many of these positions, Yoga helps to tone the body provide correct posture and keep your body tone and firm.Yoga is an excellent exercise which helps with all aspects of your life both mentally and physically. Yoga has been used to improve sleep, decrease pain in joints, increase energy, range of motion and also has many psychological benefits.

As for the Ashtanga yoga poses, they range widely in terms of positioning. You will find yourself moving from standing, backbent, inverted, balancing, seated, and even twisting poses. In power yoga, the sun salutation sequence of poses is very popular as well, so you will often use standing forward bend, upward dog, downward dog, and many other poses sprinkled in as well.

Though much of the focus in Ashtanga yoga poses is on the development of stamina and strength, you will also, as with any yoga, be focusing. You will be asked to focus your eyes on a point as you move through the poses given out by your instructor. In order to get the full effect and benefit of Ashtanga, you should make sure that your muscles and perhaps even the rooms are very warm. This ensures maximum flexibility and minimal injury as you work through the demanding postures.

Yes it is true that people are living longer today but the real question is what is their quality of life? If you have the option to start now and exercise your body using a low impact stretching and toning exercise, enabling your body and mind to get into a place of optimal health and well being or to have to rely on doctors to poke and prod at you and prescribe medications after medication what would your choice be?.Hopefully as yoga grows in popularity citizens of the world will enjoy the benefits of this low impact exercise and increase the positive energy in their mind and bodies enabling them to live longer and healthier lives.

Ardha Kurmasana – Half Tortoise Pose

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Ardha Kurmasana is also known as Half Tortoise Yoga Asana. Due to its resemblance to a tortoise it is known as the tortoise pose. This yoga asana can prove to be very beneficial to your body in every possible way. By performing this asana regularly and properly our bodies can be rejuvenated. The organs get stretched to its maximum with every movement of this asana.

The shoulder movement gets improved and so does the muscles in the corresponding areas. The abdominal muscles gets toned and become more flexible. The asana stretches the lower part of the lungs which is good for your breathing. It also increases the lung capacity which proves to be crucial if you have breathing problems like asthma. The pressure put on your neck and head improves migraine problems. It can be stated as a stress buster due to its stress relieving capacity.

K. Pattabhi Jois said that practicing these Eight Limbs and also its sub-limbs of the external practices which include the niyama and yama is not possible. In doing so, the body should be strong enough so that it can perform the practices. If the body is weak, and the sense organs are not functioning well, practicing will never be useful to the person at all.The philosophy which K. Pattabhi Jois has applied is that you must keep in mind that after doing this Ashtanga Yoga the body will improve and it will be stronger and healthier.Vinsaya and Tristhana are practiced in Ashtanga Yoga.

To practice this, you have to sit in any of the yogic sitting postures. To begin with, carry on normal breathing applying moola bandha (i.e. comfortable anal contraction). Keeping a stable moola bandha, breathe in and breathe out completely. Ensure that the moola bandha is not loosened during the process. Pause for a while between breathing in and breathing out. Breathe in deeply through the left nostril and breathe out through the right; then breathe in through the right and out through the left. Continue breathing this way, i.e. alternately from left and right nostrils, for one to three minutes. After reaching a comfort level in this way, you may move to the next stage. Close the right nostril with the right thumb keeping the other four fingers together. Now, slowly breathe in through the left nostril at a uniform speed. Repeat with the other nostril. While breathing in, raise the shoulders and expand the chest taking the ribs up. The lower abdominal region, however, must be held in.

The internal organs are massaged very well to bring the extra zest needed for your body. It serves as a great remedy for anemic as well as diabetic patients. The pressure on the thigh and legs makes it strong and sturdy. It also tones the thigh muscles due to the position in which the asana is done. The spine is elongated by the stretch provided during the asana. It is a benefit in disguise, as it cures many ailments.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautions before following any of the asanas from this article and the site. To avoid any problems while doing the asanas, it is advised that you consult a doctor and a yoga instructor. The responsibility lies solely with the reader and not with the site or the writer.

Yoga Tips For Beginners

Monday, June 27th, 2011

If you’re just looking into yoga for the first time, it’s a smart idea to make your way down to the local Barnes & Noble and buy a book on the basic postures, guidelines, and types of yoga. You’ll get an excellent feel for what’s needed of your body and mind in preparation for beginning your career in yoga. Get a book that is divided into beginner, intermediate, and expert so that you can progress along normal lines.

If you’re a member of a local gym or fitness center, go on down there and see if they’re offering any free yoga classes. There are usually flyers on the wall, but you can also ask at the front desk if there is any information. This is a great chance to learn all the basic postures because these classes are usually geared toward beginners. You’ll also be able to hang out with other people doing yoga, learn from them, and maybe pick up a spotter. A lot of exercises require another partner to help you do them.

It’s a wise plan to get to know the different parts of yoga before you immerse yourself in the exercises themselves. Yoga is a complicated discipline that is not just made up of simple exercises. There are several interrelated disciplines in yoga. There is moral discipline, self-discipline, control of breathing, postures, sensory withdrawal, focus, meditation, and transcendent practices. Each of these has names in their native Hindu language. There are sub-categories of each area once you get deeply involved in them.

There are many branches of yoga that each offer their unique benefits conferred on the person that practices them. Some are better for different people so you should learn a good deal about each one before beginning one. There is Ananda yoga, Ashanga yoga, Integral yoga, Ivengar yoga, Kripalu yoga, Kundalini yoga, Sivananda yoga, Viniyoga, Yoga College of India, Choudhury yoga, and Bikram yoga. Each has its own benefits and cons in terms of different areas of the human body, mind, and spirit.

The number of postures is astounding. There are seated, standing, prone, and supine postures. Each one works out a different part of the body. They help you concentrate on different areas that need the most work. Some have you recline forward, bend backward, bend sideways, twist, invert yourself, and learn to balance yourself upright. It should make your muscles lose tension just thinking about them.

The basics of when, where, how, and what to practice are along specific guidelines that will instruct your daily progress as you learn from a yogic master. Don’t do this unless you learn from a licensed professional.

A Good Yoga Teacher Is Always In Demand

Friday, June 17th, 2011

In India nearly five thousand years ago there first developed a practice that has today become synonymous with healthy living. Yoga is a systematic means by which to improve the overall health of mind and body. For many it is about developing the spirit as well. Being a yoga teacher is for many people the ideal way to earn a living and more and more people are choosing to do just that.

The Hindu tradition from which the disciplines have emerged is vast and colourful. It contains a wide range of gods and goddesses, who rub shoulders with small local spirits. Even more can be found in rocks and rivers, lakes and mountains. For the believing Hindu the whole landscape is imbued with life and magic. To people who do not come from this particular religion it can look very confusing. Writers on the subject though suggest that all of these many spiritual beings are just aspects of one overall supreme god.

The stories that are associated with this religious tradition are full of colour and life. At times they may seem dark and sinister, at others they are joyful and life affirming. All of them have something to teach the believer and many of these teachings have made it into the yogic traditions that are practised across the world today. Some teachers enjoy sharing these stories with the class.

It today is practiced by people who have little or no knowledge of the Hindu religion or philosophy. It is practiced across the globe by thousands if not millions of people. Classes are run in even the smallest of places, and people from all backgrounds benefit from it. They may themselves have a variety of different religious backgrounds. Some classes are run by organisations which have their roots in different Indian philosophical traditions. Others will be offered by individual teachers, all of whom will have different interests and backgrounds.

Many people are drawn to the practice because they wish to improve their posture and flexibility. The exercises may enable people to achieve a better posture and it may also help them with their breathing. General health is said to improve, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that people who enjoy yoga are less prone to coughs and winter colds.

One lesser known benefit is that of concentration. The practices contained in the variety of yogic disciplines all require the development of greater concentration. It can assist people in becoming more single minded. This can help with thought processes. It can enable people to become more effective in the workplace. They may report feeling calmer and better able to cope with the many ups and downs that life throws at them.

This is one reason so many people in the public eye have been drawn towards yoga. These have included pop stars, movie stars and even politicians have advocated it and its benefits. These people have again increased the popularity of the practice. They are often advocates for particular schools of yoga which then experience a sudden increase in interest. It really started to enter the public consciousness in the western world during the 1960s when a number of high profile people in the celebrity world championed it and its benefits.

A good Yoga Langford teacher is usually in demand and most places will offer classes in a variety of different types.
