Bikram Yoga – Sweating The Small Stuff

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Having been encouraged to give Bikram Yoga a try, it was with some trepidation that I climbed the stairs to the studio. For those of you unfamiliar with this fom of the ancient Indian practice, it involves doing yoga postures in a room heated to 40 degrees.

It was therefore with some trepidation that I found myself slipping into my shorts, grabbing my two towels and bottle of water and heading into the yoga room. The room itself was big with mirrors all along one wall. Picking up a rubber yoga mat I took my place among the other acolytes. Soon enough I heard what sounded like a ship’s boiler roaring into life and the room started to get warm, then hot. Next news is that a very fit looking woman hoves into view with a Madonna-esque radio mic and let’s us know that we are about to begin.

After a bit of preamble about not pushing yourself too hard and that just staying in the room for 90 minutes was an achievement it was time to start the first breathing exercise. This completed I was puffing like the Flying Scotsman and redder than Dennis Healey. I was also sweating up a storm. After breathing it was straight into Half Moon. You would be amazed at how difficult it is standing with your arms above your head or on one leg for over a minute. The people around me were also bending sideways like bendy pink bananas.

And so it went for about 20 minutes when we were allowed our first water break. At this point I made the rookie error of downing about a litre of water. If I wasn’t nauseated before I certainly was after that bit of tomfoolery!

After our break we were taken through all manner of contortions from the punishing Triangle to the just plain sadistic Rabbit posture. In the end things settled down a tad and I was able to get into some of the postures without wondering how I would be able to get out. Apparently when you are squeezing in and out of the postures, you are dumping a lot of toxins into the bloodstream which can cause a bit of nausea.

By the time we got to the final breathing I was standing on a soaking towel in shorts that were as wet as if I had been sitting in a bath. However I felt strangely euphoric. Standing under an ice cold shower some 10 minutes later I began to feel even better. When I got outside I was feeling yet more full of beans. I was buzzing well into the evening and most of the next day. In fact I found going to sleep quite hard and I am now very familiar with the details of my bedroom ceiling.

So next day and every day for the following 10 days I returned for more hot stretching and bending action and the results have been amazing. Apart from the stone in weight that has gone somewhere, the big difference I feel is the increased energy – a total revelation. So while it can be very daunting and 26 postures done twice each in such a hot room can cause you to have many strange moments, the results have to be felt to be believed. So I encourage you to give Bikram a go, if you can get over the initial shock and keep going back for more you will be surprised at how quickly you improve!

The Thing About Yoga Is…

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Yoga was developed in India at least three thousand years ago, and is a discipline that uses breath control, meditation and physical exercises. There are number of things about yoga that make it particular appealing, chiefly because it helps to promote mental and physical well being. The purpose of the philosophy and technique is to achieve a heightened awareness, and ultimately, to attain spiritual enlightenment.

First, there are some basic principals about yoga that are an integral part of its teachings. These come mainly from the Bhagavad Gita, which is one of the primary religious texts outlining ways to achieve liberation from one’s worldly worries and desires.

There are many different types of yoga, and one of the most popular forms in the West is hatha yoga, which focuses on strengthening, toning and relaxation. Most yoga exercises focus on proper positioning of the body in various postures. One of the high points about yoga is its benefit to overall body health. Daily practice improves strength, suppleness, and circulation. It promotes relaxation and increases range of motion, which helps to reduce the likelihood of muscle strain. Many people use it as a primary source of exercise, and others use it complementarily – such as with running, to help strengthen a host of different muscles.

Yogis believe that breath is the bridge between mind and body. Pranayama are specific exercises in which the person breathes deeply, concentrating on the breath as it enters and exits the nostrils. This puts the person at ease and allows their muscles to warm up gradually. This focus on breathing allows deep muscle relaxation, releases tension, and induces a tranquil state.

Yoga can be especially useful to older people and those with disabilities who are recovering from an illness. However, anyone can benefit from the slow, gentle exercises and the positive effect they have on hormonal balance, alleviating depression, and increasing strength and flexibility. One of the best things about yoga is that it is accessible to people of all ages and physical fitness levels.

One of the important differences between yoga and a typical workout exercise is an emphasis on process. While many exercise programs encourage you to push and strain every muscle in your body, to eradicate the ‘negative’ things in your body, the positive thing about yoga is that it has an entirely different approach. It focuses on developing awareness of the body as it is, accepting and working within its limits.

What Do You Really Want From Yoga?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Are you looking for a healthy mindset, fitness, spiritual guidance, holistic health, self-improvement, success, or just more oxygen? Yoga can deliver all of these, but I doubt you find all of this “under one roof.” The reason is that there are many kinds of Yoga, and some ashrams, or Yoga schools, will address some of the above-mentioned needs as priorities.

Do you ever wonder why some people are so successful in life? I am not talking about someone who has “everything handed to them.” What I am referring to is someone who has taken the time to know what they want from life, pursues it, and then attains it. This comes from self-analysis, meditation, and goal setting skills.

Do not confuse yourself with someone else’s dreams or expectations of you. You must know your particular strengths, weaknesses, passions, and desires to move forward in your Yoga practice. Remember when you were a child and adults asked you, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

If you are not sure, you should compile a list of ideas. Here are some things to consider when deciding “how to find yourself” and “where to go from here.”

What is your concept of happiness?

Please be honest with yourself and go after your dreams. You cannot abandon responsibility, but you can make small changes in your lifestyle. Wake up each day and pursue your goals with happiness in your heart.

What are your real passions, obsessions, and desires?

These are ideas you think about all the time. Listen to your heart; the answers are within. They should not cause harm to anyone and should be morally sound. Whatever they are, they will keep you going when you have any doubts. This is your fuel for daily motivation.

What does any of this have to do with Yoga?

Everything – Yoga is a daily path of self-discovery and self-improvement. Yoga literally means “Unity,” and applies to all things. If you know yourself, you can help yourself. Help usually starts from within. Most of us have to ask for help, and you must know when, and who, to ask.

Seek and find the Yoga that will help you find yourself. Yoga’s many branches are over 5,000 years old. They are the origin of many self-improvement and health maintenance systems. Achievement is realized by habits. You alone, have the power to create or change your habits.

Meditation Benefits – Physical, Spiritual, And Mental

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Are you burdened by life’s many problems? If you are then you may find it useful to take a moment or two to read up about meditation benefits.

Man has used mediation since prehistory and for a wide range of reasons. Do not think of it solely as a new age practice which has very little relevance in the modern world. It is for good reason more people are developing an interest today.

There are actually many benefits of practicing meditation on a regular basis. These can be split into three areas – spiritual, physical as well as emotional. The information discussed below will help to present a clearer picture on just why it is more people are choosing to take up meditating as a way of coping with their problems.

Spiritual benefits: To start with let’s examine the spiritual benefits of mediation. It is important to understand that there is no religious connotation with meditation. It is practiced by people of every faith, belief and walk of life; this includes Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists. Through practicing meditation you can develop a greater understanding of your inner self and the power of the soul. It is a simple way to detach yourself from trivial strife that can often plague your days.

Physical benefits: There are an equal number of physical benefits to meditating as there are spiritual. Those who practice on a regular basis have found that their bodies become more relaxed as hypertension is removed and metabolic rate slowed down. It is also thought that our immune systems can be given a boost as lung capacity and energy levels can be improved. All of these factors would help us to rest more soundly at night and generally feel less tension.

Mental benefits: Apart from the above mentioned spiritual and psychical benefits there are also the positive mental changes that can be had with meditation. You should feel far less anxious and restlessness and therefore be in a much better state of mind to cope with whatever life throws at you. The mind and body will become more harmonious and allow for a greater creativity and less confusion and depression. It is even possible to enhance concentration and memory skills as the mind should be easier to focus. This is more important today as we often have a lot we need to achieve in a short space of time.

Nobody can deny that modern living takes its toll at an early age on many people. By practicing mediation often you will feel like you have a new lease of life.

Yoga Blocks Are A Good Support System

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Any exercise when done correctly would help in getting the proper results. Every part of the body would be rejuvenated by getting your exercise right. The yoga blocks used for doing yoga asanas would create extra strength which you need. This helps in doing most of your asanas without strain. Some of the asanas which can be done with the help of this foam is Pincha Mayurasana (Feathered Peacock Pose),or use it to ground your lower hand in standing poses as well as a good support for your hips in bridge pose. The foam would reduce the distance of your hand from the ground making it easier to do the asanas easily.

You can get these blocks in different colors to suit your personality as well as according to your needs. These blocks are of great purpose as some of the poses which many may find it hard to do can be modified as it will get the floor closer to you. These are very lightweight and can be used on regular basis. These are easy to grip making it easy to handle the block. There are blocks made of cork too which are very durable and made of natural materials which make it environment friendly. These provide the comfort and support which is required for doing the asanas.

There are foam wedges which are also very important for doing the asanas. It is mainly used for keeping it under your heels while squatting or under the hips while doing forward bends. These foam wedges make the exercise easy and equally manageable. One can also use this to avoid the overstretching or pressuring your joints for poses such as facing dog or upward bow.

Yoga Exercises For Pregnant Women

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Pregnant women can definitely benefit from doing yoga. The experience is one in which you can focus on what is happening within your body, relieve the stresses from worry and anxiety as well as keep your body in shape during this time. Pregnancy is a time of great risk though, so any and all exercises performed during this time need to be done with great care. At any time that you feel that you have overdone it, stop and rest. Make sure to ask your doctor if yoga is safe for you during pregnancy especially if you have any complications during it.

Exercises You Can Enjoy And Reap Benefits From

Yoga breathing: Probably the most important aspect to the pregnant women is relaxing and relieving stress. Although it is not an exercise, it is a way of taking control of the body once again to encourage positive-ness and to increase health. The right breathing techniques can provide many benefits. Take the time to practice the most basic of techniques that yoga teaches in breathing.

Standing Yoga poses: In your first trimester, the best exercises to do are the standing yoga poses. These are basic and taught in most yoga sessions. This will help strengthen your legs and muscles and help with circulation while reducing leg cramps too.

Asanas: In the next couple of months, you can do what feels right to you. But, never push too hard. You may want to reduce the time that you spend practicing the Asanas as you do not want to overwork or tire your body.

Moderate twisting: You can do supine poses, backbends as well as some twisting as long as you are comfortable. Just ensure that you are doing these in moderation.

Word Of Caution

It is important to note that many yoga practitioners warn against practicing yoga from the tenth through the fourteenth week of pregnancy since these are crucial times in development. Also, it is important to never overstretch the abdomen during any time of the pregnancy. When twisting, do so with your shoulders and the upper back only. As for inversion poses, only do them through the seventh month is you are completely comfortable doing them. Never push too hard and yoga will be very enjoyable during pregnancy.
