How To Choose Between A Gym Environment And Private Studio For Your Yoga Routines

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Fitness Kamloops

In our demanding, overworked and very stressed society, we continually find ways on how to relieve our stress. Some would go out to bars and resto. Some would go to movie houses regularly. Some would go to a gym to get a membership and stay fit. That is why a lot of gym owners have started to offer yoga classes. We can give some high praise to nationwide gym because they are one of the reasons why yoga has reached its popularity to the max.

However, if you are a beginner at yoga and do not know where to go to, gym classes would not be the best suggestion for you. In my opinion, I might suggest going initially to a little studio session who offer yoga. If you do not know one, you can try to search it online. It is better to look for the nearest place so that you will not take a lot of time travelling for your yoga class. I would also recommend that you check on their customers feedback and see their comments on their services. Keep away from those websites who have many damaging feedback.

Yoga sessions at studios provide little class size. As a result of this, you may have a more personalized service from your instructor. Yoga poses and activities what the clients benefit from. Students are more relaxed to learn and do their moves. Yoga class studio will give you the realization that yoga is not just a simple routine or exercise but a true experience. Also, most of the yoga studios do not use mirrors. You must not be worried by your peer even if yoga is an inside activity. You must have internalization on yoga and having mirrors can be a disturbance for you.

On the other hand, gym class is not advisable for everyone, especially if you want a more personalized service and a slow paced environment. Sometimes, you really cannot follow most of the instructions from your gym instructor because he is too quick. There are some gym members who preferred it quick so you cannot just simply say that you want your time. Since gym classes have more members compared to studio classes, some of their members are already on the pro level and of course, you cannot cope up with their movements. With this scenario, you may end up doing the wrong moves and poses which will injure you in the long run. Instead of relieving your stress, you will be more stresses in pushing yourself to catch up with your peers.

In addition, studio class instructors can easily modify and alternate your moves if you have some injuries and cannot perform specific moves. That is not attainable during a gym session that sometimes has thirty to forty students. Gym yoga class environment is not encouraging changes. Teacher cannot simply change poses for one injured member.

To finish, gym is only good for aerobics, boxing or weight lifting. Picture this, it’s your 1st day at your yoga session, the class has started and your instructor has started to teach you the correct breathing. While closing your eyes to target your breathing, you may hear the banging of the weights, the large steps from the aerobic class and the punching on the punching bags.

Yoga May Provide Pain Releif

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Those who practice yoga are quick to praise this ancient art’s ability to increase flexibility and relieve stress. New research now suggests that yoga may also be an effective pain management technique.

Living with chronic pain can be the cause of constant discomfort, rob you of your strength reserves and create feelings of depression and anxiety. Yoga techniques may minimize pain, medication usage and help you build a fuller and happier life.

The best Yoga techniques for pain management are breathing, relaxation and meditation. These three act to distract your mind from the pain, reduce the sress, allowing you to “move through” the pain, lessening it’s full impact.

Relaxation can be mental or physical. Physical relaxation simply means reducing muscle tension. It can reduce both acute and chronic pain. Chronic pain often responds better to mental relaxtation techniques such as meditation. Meditation is the conscience effort to reduce your mind’s “chatter” and to concentrate on “not thinking”.

Yoga is beleived to reduce pain by assisting the areas of the brain which respond to pain. The spinal cord also has a gate controlling pain mechanism which Yoga is beleived to influence. Like other forms of physical activity, Yoga increases the production of natural painkilling substances called endorphins. Finally, breathing exercises promote an increased exhalation time which is associated with a natural biological pain killing mechanism.

If you live with chronic pain, you know how debilitating it can be. Today, Yoga is a wide spread fitness practice. The breathing, relaxation and meditation exercises can furthur aid in pain reduction. Regular yoga practice allows you to build a foundation of internal strength by opening a window to a part of yourself that is not dictated by the demands of the physical body. This detachment can lead to a reduction in pain.

Easy to follow guided meditation in under 20 minutes

Review Date: June 8, 2010
Reviewer: Deepty Joshi, NYC
I do this meditation as much as I can. I find that listening to the CD helps me "let go." One issue I used to face is the inner noise that can overwhelm the meditative experience. I find this CD helps my focus. I can relax, shut of my mind and follow the instructions. I also found that the more I do this meditation, the better and deep is the experience. It's liek going to the gym. After the first few weeks, I was able to truly let go.

I highly recommend this CD to all mediators, beginners or not.

What You Need To Know When You Start Yoga Exercises

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

No down you have heard about yoga for years but you may not really know much about it. If you are just a beginner in the yoga world, here are some things that you need to know about before you start.

There are several different styles or kinds of yoga exercises, that range from very gentle and relaxing positions to fairly fast-paced cardio workouts. So first decide what you want to accomplish with yoga. If you have suffered an injury or are trying to manage pain, then perhaps one of the more gentle types of yoga will be best at least for now.

So how do you learn how to practice yoga? Well, there are plenty of DVDs and videos available that can help you learn more about it. However, it’s usually best to learn the exercises from a quality instructor instead. There are many yoga classes available at studios and gyms all across the country. It may be a good idea to ask around and get recommendations from others about the best yoga instructors in your area. A good instructor will be very patient with you as you start out and will focus on teaching you not only the exercises themselves, but also how to maintain proper body alignment and breathing techniques throughout the positions and poses. It’s a good idea to visit a few yoga classes and perhaps sit in on a session or two to learn more about each instructor, and then choose the one that you like best.

It’s important that you approach yoga with the right mental attitude. It is not a competition. It is not a challenge. You are not trying to do something better than anyone else. In fact, yoga is a very personal experience. So listen to your own body as you learn the exercises and you can’t go wrong.

So what equipment are you going to need for this new adventure? Well, wearing the right clothing will be important. Your clothing needs to be comfortable and not restrictive. And since you can get very warm from practicing the poses and positions, your clothing should also be breathable and keep your skin as dry as possible.

Perhaps the most common piece of equipment is a yoga mat. They can actually come in handy for a couple of reasons. First of all, the mat can help keep you from slipping as you exercise on the floor. This gets more important as the session progresses and you perspire at your body heats up. The other benefit of using a yoga mat is that it keeps you from having to sit on a hard bare floor. There are several types of mats available, so just choose the one that fits you best.

Water will be important to have handy as you will need to stay hydrated as you exercise and replace any lost fluids. Generally, it’s best to practice yoga on an empty stomach, so try to avoid eating heavy meals very soon beforehand too.

Many people have found that yoga makes a very important contribution to their mental and physical well-being. Hopefully, it can do the same for you.

Ways About How To Meditate Effectively

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

There are never any right or wrong ways how to meditate effectively.Always it is the perception of the individual. As such practitioners often do not offer a formula based that criterion. They advise individuals to develop their own best ways of achieving success.

But for beginners there must be distinct guidelines as to how the process can be most useful. This article is catered to help those who have just begun practicing the art to assist them to better apply what they have been taught. Ultimately they could obtain the best outcomes.

Never should the learner adopt a laying posture when engaging in the activity. It is best to sit on the floor or in a chair. This becomes a matter of which is best suitable contour for the comfort of the body. It allows for alignment with the inner being.

Usually the mantra which was given during the initiation ceremony is brought into the mind. This permits the body to coincide or relate to what the mind is expressing at the time. It is very important that the body listens to the mind for the most favorable outcomes.

With this synchronicity it is advisable that the learner then closes the eyes. Coupled with that procedure is breathing. These are two very important aspects of the discipline. The breaths should be conscious, deep, shallow and intermittent. They ought to be effortless as well.

One of the major means of receiving the best results form this activity is to close the eyes. Precisely it is to ensure that contact with the outer is detached. It is important that there be no interruptions from the utter to distract or compromise simulations being transmitted from the mind to the body.

A great way to heighten awareness is through inhaling and exhaling at regular intervals. These are most significant when they are taken as one deep breath followed by a shallow one and vise versa. It monitors effortless breathing by encouraging a relationship between the mind and the diaphragm.

A popular inquiry by students is why such guidelines have to be followed closely. The truth of the matter is that each participant has his or her own needs to be fulfilled. As such each one must have access to the basic plan for the best results.

Conclusively then the best ways on how to meditate effectively depends on preferences of the individual. Largely it is based on what are the personal goals. What is important is that there is a standard guideline from which to follow and make the necessary adjustments.

Product Description

Isokinetics Ball Chairs are the same chairs sold by others, only at a manufacturer direct price. No middleman means no need to pay more! And, we provide all of our chairs with a 1 year guarantee. As an additional bonus, we provide an exclusive exercise ball measuring tape that takes the guesswork out of inflating your ball. Sitting on an exercise ball while at home or work promotes flexibility, coordination, motor skills, core strengthening, and balance. Your body, when positioned on top of an exercise ball, is constantly making small adjustments, often imperceptible, to remain balanced and thus is constantly exercising a large group of muscles in doing so. By strengthening your body's core muscle group you help improve your posture, have better balance and guard against back injuries. It may take time before your body becomes accustom to sitting on an exercise ball, since your core muscles may not have gotten much exercise previously. Start by using it 10 to 15 minutes a day and gradually work your way up. If you have had back problems or injuries, make sure to consult your physician or therapist first. Note: We provide a small, basic pump for free for you to have a way to inflate your ball. However, exercise balls require a lot of air and it will take a lot of pumping with the free pump. So, you may want to consider purchasing at this time a high volume air pump, especially if you use exercise balls a lot or have other things you often inflate, like pool toys or air mattresses.

Product Details

  • Factory direct price: same manufacturer, same quality, same patented design as sold by others
  • Includes a 52cm ball, available in your choice of colors, and a small starter pump

Surprisingly Comfortable

Review Date: August 20, 2008
Reviewer: Linda Bowen, wy United States
I and 3 of the girls that work for me got one of these "chairs". Two of us had been using a regular exercise ball, but due to the fact we are up and down alot during the day we decided to try the ones that are on casters. The "chairs" arrived sooner than expected and were easy to set up...well, except for the air pump, it was cheesy. We used a better pump we had on hand. The only problem I could state is the fact that the brakes on the casters will lock on their own, but it hasn't been a huge problem.
As far as the total experience of sitting on the ball chair all day at work, getting up and down and moving from the keyboard to the file drawer without having to get up (as I had to do with the regular exercise ball) it is a great chair! The exercise ball by itself took concentration and it was not good to wear a skirt or dress while sitting on it. With the casters it's no problem to wear a dress.
One of the girls had been using the Wii Fit Board prior to sitting on this chair. After about a week or so her fitness scores went up on the Wii; for better balance and core fitness. All of us have noticed better posture since using the ball chair. It is possible to slouch while sitting on it, but it is not comfortable to slouch. For some reason it is just more comfortable to sit up straight.
One of the girls had been having minor back pain and she said she hasn't had it since using the ball chair.
We do get allot of comments from customers about how weird or funny it looks, but it has not deterred any of us to go back to a regular chair. It just gives us a chance to applaud the attributes of how much better our balance, posture and core fitness is and tell them "We are always on the ball".
Of the four of us that bought the chair, we all like it 100% and have not gone back to the regular chairs provided to us by the county. We have all been using the Balance Ball Chair since the day we got them, 1 1/2 months ago.
Great ergonomic chair

Review Date: January 25, 2008
Reviewer: Katya Martell, Florida, USA
I ordered this chair here - the same chair my friend got somewhere else for $150! I've been using it for 2 weeks and love it! I have a really comfortable leather office chair, but I slouch in it, and really wanted a better desk set-up. I have to say that I'm glad I kept my old chair, because as I get used to sitting up with good posture for long periods of time, sometimes I need a break. My middle back muscles start to hurt, just because they are weak, as I've been slouching at my desk for so long! My chiropractor said to just keep with it and the muscles will get stronger, and its true, I can sit in on this chair for hours at a time now.

The pump isn't that bad - at first you think its going to take forever, but its really only 10 or 15 minutes. I definitely recommend following the directions and filling it up to 80% and then letting the ball sit for 24 hours before inflating fully. After the 24 hours and filling mine up to 100%, I had to let some of the air go to get to a comfortable height for my desk. Easy to do.

Only two problems - I ordered the red ball, and I got yellow. I'm keeping it, the yellow is cool, just not what I was expecting. Wasn't a big deal to me. The other problem is that my 2 year old wants to take the ball out of the chair and play with it all the time. =)Good thing I have another chair to use when he's around.
Excellent!

Review Date: February 16, 2009
Reviewer: Shawn LoCascio, San Mateo CA United States
The isokinetics ball chair works like a charm. I recommend it for anyone who wants to improve their sitting posture and improve their health in the process. Instead of alot of fluff about how I love the chair, I will make this easy and concise.

- If you sit at a desk and are contemplating between this or just a plain ball, get this. You don't worry about the ball rolling away and you don't worry about being too low.
- This is the less expensive of the available offerings. I can see no real difference between this one and the gaiam.
- As you can see, there are no arms. If you have a keyboard tray at correct level, it wont be an issue. If your keyboard and mouse are not at a good ergonomic level, you may find your arms straining.
- The construction is solid. Yes, it is plastic, but it is not flimsy fisher-price plastic as mentioned. Use this as it is intended and you will have no problems.
- To avoid the ball explosions (that sounds dirty) others have noted, pay close attention to the instructions when the chair arrives. You wont be using this chair day one out of the box.
- The "back" of the chair is not actually a back, it is for balancing. It is not intended that you lean back on this ball chair. The instructions includes exercise recommendations and the "back" comes into play then.
- Go slow at first. Your spine needs to adjust to sitting up straight. Eventually you can sit the day on the ball and improve core strength as well as posture. At first, it may actually hurt if you sit too long.
- While it is not impossible to slouch, the chair does make it less comfortable to do so.
- The wheel locks others complained about... there are only two. make sure you put those wheels in back and you wont kick them. They have not fallen any other time other than when I did something to cause them too.

I have noted improvements in posture in just a few weeks of owning and using this chair. I dont wake with a stiff back anymore and I seem to be walking an inch or two taller as of late.

Here's to your health!
Why pay more?

Review Date: August 31, 2007
Reviewer: Bill Nicholas,
I bought one of these Isokinetics chairs for my wife and, yes, it does appear to be the exact same balance ball chair others are selling for a lot more. Nice quality. A neat little thing they provide with the ball is a measuring tape designed for exercise balls. It tells you exactly when the ball reaches the right size. I've got to say the pump that comes with it is a lot of work, like 15 minutes to fill the ball up, but what do expect for free? Good buy.
Isokinetics Ball Chair, great product.

Review Date: November 17, 2007
Reviewer: Larry Walls,
This is a great product. I use it at my desk in place of my regular leather chair. It helps my posture as well as provides me more cushion for sitting.

Pregnancy Yoga – What Are The Benefits?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

For many women, becoming pregnant means they can finally change gears and let their bodies take over the phenomenal process of creating a baby. A stressful work life, fitness regime and other commitments which once seemed all important can now take a back seat. The months of pregnancy also provide a chance to gradually mentally prepare for the massive life change of having a child.

To make the most of this time it is important to switch to a gentler lifestyle. Unfortunately it can seem like everything from cheese to alcohol to aerobics is off limits, which can make a pregnant woman feel like she has to sit around twiddling her thumbs for 9 months! In reality it does not have to be this way. Keeping the body active is one of the best ways to stay healthy. Gentle walking is a great low impact exercise, swimming is excellent for soothing and supporting the body as it expands. All things considered, Yoga is possibly the perfect all round activity for pregnant women because it is one of the few purely non-competitive forms of exercise, as well as providing all the excellent benefits which yoga is well known for.

The benefits especially relevant during pregnancy include proper alignment, relaxation and breathing. Most antenatal advisors will talk ad nauseum about the importance of breathing during labour. It sounds obvious and somewhat patronising, yet during the intensity of a contraction, your breath can seem like the only thing you can focus on and control. By practicing yoga-style breathing in the lead up to labour, you are more likely to remember it when it counts, it can help level you out when you are excited, scared or tired. Don’t worry if it takes some time to master some of the breathing exercises – just focusing on deep Yoga breathing will have a profound affect on how you feel.

A good yoga teacher should also encourage better ways of sitting, standing and moving during pregnancy as your centre of gravity is altered. You can expect classes to be made up of a mix of traditional yoga poses slightly modified to work around a pregnant belly and a variety of possible labour positions. The notion of “active birthing’ that you hear so much about actually is very in tune with exploring different Yoga postures. This basically means the mother is encouraged to move around as much as she likes during her labour and find positions that instinctively feel right, often making the most of gravity by squatting or leaning forward on hands and knees. This is in direct contrast to the old fashioned delivery wards that would keep women lying on their backs during labour.

Although prenatal yoga is a vary gentle activity, as with all physical exercise, it is possible to overdo it. The main thing to be aware of is that you don’t over stretch during a pose as joints are much looser during pregnancy. This is because a hormone called Relaxin is produced which helps your pelvis soften and open slightly during childbirth. Taking it easy is a simple rule to accommodate and applies to all areas of life during pregnancy. Listening the body which is working hard to create a new life is the best thing you can do for yourself and your unborn child. Good practice for the months and years to come!

Wonderful baby soother that fits our decor..

Review Date: September 7, 2008
Reviewer: Alexandra Higgins, Sunnyvale, CA United States
I hate to say that I chose this exercise ball because it was an awesome color in the photo. And I gotta admit, in real life, it is an awesome color that goes well with our decor.

I am 5'5" with a long torso/short legs and, unfortunately, this ball is too large for me to do most of the seated exercises. Currently, we have it partially deflated and use it to soothe our cranky newborn who will passes out after we hold him all swaddled up and bounce on it.

As a former gym rat and physio therapy victim, the ball is great. Set up is easy, but it does take awhile for the plastic to soften enough that you can get it round and for the stink to go away. It does not have that cheap, slick GAIM feel that collects near vicinity dirt and hair. Its slightly textured surface has a better grip.

I do like it a lot and would love to buy the same one but in a smaller size, but, alas, they do not manufacture it in the same color. So sad!

Using this as an office chair

I'm about 5'8" and this has been a back saver. I used to sit in an office chair for over 8 hours per day, which was killing my lower back. Ever since I have switched to the ball my back problems have disappeared.
After much research, I got a GREAT exercise ball!

After being a "couch potato" for too many years, I am beginning an exercise program to increase core strength and lose some weight. The reviews convinced me to buy this one. (I have the olive color.) I inflated it 80% on the first day, like the instructions said, and over the next 2 days increased it to the full size. (I thought it was full until I checked the exercise ball at my physical therapist.) The stopper comes out easily to add air, and I haven't had to add air again in the first week. (We did end up using a bicycle pump because it was faster than the one that was included.) I am 5'7" and this ball seems just right for me. I like the texture because it doesn't pick up dirt and is not too slick. The thing is, my kids want to play with this ball. :-)

I bought this ball after purchasing another brand and finding it unsatisfactory. The surface of the other ball was sticky and actually took the paint off of the walls wherever it touched them. The walls now need painted because of the other brand of ball. oh yeah, the paint stuck to that other ball and can not be removed. So I decided to try this ball after reading the reviews and researching the company website. I am glad I bought this ball, it works well and does not peel paint. I do not like the pump that it comes with, so I actually used the pump from the other ball. I definitely recommend this ball, it is well made and odor free.
