Yoga History 101

Monday, May 31st, 2010

When you practice yoga, it is, of course, not necessary to have a full understanding of yoga history in order to fully benefit from your practice. A brief understanding of the history behind yoga, however, may increase your spiritual practice and inspire you to find out more about the tradition behind the discipline.

The first writings about yoga were written in Sanskrit in early religious manuscripts in India called the Vedas. The word ‘yoga’ has many meanings. The root of the word is ‘yug’ which means ‘to hitch up’, referring to fastening horse bridles to a carriage. But yoga also means ‘to actively put to use’ or ‘yoke’ or ‘join’. Today, it is agreed upon that yoga is a method of joining or a discipline. Men who practice yoga are called yogi or yogin and women who practice yoga are called yogini.

Yoga was first passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. It wasn’t until about 2000 years ago when an Indian named Patanjali wrote ‘The Yoga Sutra’ that the philosophy of yoga was committed to paper. Yoga is not just about stretching and breathing and holding poses. Yoga is a philosophy on how to live life and deal with the challenges that human beings face daily. The Yoga Sutra defined this philosophy in 195 statements.

Sutra can be defined as ‘thread’ or ‘aphorism’, which means ‘a short declaration of truth’. It also means ‘the concentration of a large quantity of information into a simple definition’. It is a way of looking at truths that apply to everyone despite culture in the clearest way possible.

Hatha yoga, or the yoga that you do when you take a yoga class or perform yogic poses, was begun as a physical form of meditation. The physical act of yoga calms your body and allows your mind to become calm. It also gives you the physical strength to sustain long periods of meditation.

When you perform the physical practice of yoga, you are only engaging in half of the discipline as it has been practiced for thousands of years. Yoga is an incredible form of exercise and calming for the body, but it can also be used as a spiritual practice and a way to calm the mind and will as well.

Meditation For Stress Relief – What If 10 Minutes A Day Could Change Your Life?

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Reduced levels of stress and peace of mind can be achieved successfully with meditation. Most people have so many thoughts running through their mind on a daily basis that cause them stress including family, work and money related issues. If this is you, then you will benefit from a few minutes of quieting your mind each day. You can achieve both peace of mind and better health with a regular meditation practice even in only for a few minutes a day.

With so many demands on your time, it may be hard to even imagine spending 30-60 minutes a day practicing meditation but if you can take it once step at a time and commit to just 10 minutes per day to start, you will begin to notice some remarkable benefits even with this short time commitment. Self care is essential in helping you to maintain your energy and your health for all of your other daily activities and meditation is suitable for anyone.

Meditation is not a simple practice. The majority of people, when they take notice, find that their mind jumps around from thought to thought and their thoughts can even be quite repetitive. Once you begin practicing meditation, you will notice this. Begin meditating by following the flow of your breath. As you inhale through your nose, pay attention to the sensation in your nostrils and feel your breath travel deep down into your lower abdomen and back up and out again. By focusing on your breathing regularly even when you are not actively meditating, you will begin to feel more relaxed.

You can also try another focusing technique which requires you to stare at a fire or a candle flame. You need only to focus on the flicker of the flames. This gives your mind something to do so that it won’t jump around from thought to thought so much.

Or, you may want to try a mantra for the purpose of focusing your mind. You simply repeat your chosen word silently to yourself while in meditation and you can also visualize the word before you if you like.

Don’t become frustrated if you notice your mind wandering, simply return your focus to your breathing. Remember that anything worthwhile doing takes practice to become good at it. That’s why they call it a “practice”. You won’t master it in a day. Keep practicing, if only for 10 minutes per day without worrying about trying to be marathon meditator and you’ll soon be enjoying the stress relief benefits of meditation.

Touching On The History Of Yoga

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

The History of Yoga has a lot to do with the present times. The earliest Yoga started some 5000 years ago since human civilization begun. The scholars have believed that Yoga was originated out of Stone Age Shamanism.

This is because there were some cultural similarities between Mehrgarh which was a Neolithic settlement and the Modern Hinduism. The shamanistic culture of Mergarh was in fact influenced by Hindu principles, symbols and rituals of the present. The ancient shamanism and early Yoga had so much similar for the reason both wanted to go beyond the human condition.

Shamanism’s principal goal was to heal the members who were in their community and at the same time act as the religious mediators.

Archaic Yoga also had the same objectives as they were community oriented and they aimed to establish the enormous order through senses and inner vision which then can be applied to our daily lives.

As time went on, Yoga has progressed and has regarded the inmost occurrence. Yogis then have been persistent on trying to improve the individual explanation, recovery and salvation.

Yoga’s evidences were first tracked in the archaeological evidence which was found in stone seals that were dug up from the Indus valley. Yoga postures were traced and seen from the figures which were illustrated in the stone seals. The artefacts were placed on History books circa 3000 B.C., which was linked to the great Indus-Sarasvati Civilization which was known to be the largest civilization that existed in the ancient world. The Indus-Sarasvati, being a nautical society, exported goods all over Africa and the Middle East. They build up sewage systems and put up geometrical brick roads and constructed multi-story buildings.

The Vedas are known as the oldest scripture in the world which were the earliest texts, and was brought by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization. It was a collection of hymns that commends a high power which included the oldest recorded tradition in Yoga. They have considered this the divine revelation. The intelligence of the Vedas was known as the Pre-classical Yoga or the Vedic. This was described by the ritualistic ceremonies that the Yoga practitioners have required in order to go beyond the boundaries of the mind.

The history of yoga would not have been completed in the classical stage of yoga. After the time and turn of the millennium, yoga and its spread in different forms have come up with the need for standardisation. This is significant so that the people will be aware of it and can be applied by them. Due to this, during the second century, C.E., Patanjali composed and collected seminal text that was the Yoga-Sutra, which had defined the Classical Yoga.

At the age of Postclassical Yoga in the enormous history of Yoga, it gave rise to some industrious literature, which included the Tantra and the Hatha that are famously known these days. They were taught in schools for Yoga and practiced by many. Therefore, post classical Yoga is described to the adaptation of our present state. It is the time when yoga has evolved very much and introduced to people. It has then been applied in the United States since the 1800’s.

Now in the recent decades, yoga has greatly and speedily evolved. Swami Sivananda was one of the prominent gurus ever to master yoga. He has served as a doctor and he has generously opened up schools in Europe and America.

Now as we move on with the yoga practices that we have today, it is much helpful and easier to understand if we looked back on the history of yoga.

Tips To Get A Better Sleep Through Meditation

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

You probably know that a deeper and more relaxed sleep will make you feel better the next day and you will be more alert. But have you considered using meditation to help you to fall asleep more quickly and let you sleep more soundly through the night? Meditation relaxes the mind and the body, helping you to fall asleep sooner.

A lot of people, for a variety of reasons, may try taking numerous different pills. However, you should know that with sleeping pills, you run the risk of interrupted sleep and daytime drowsiness. If you decide to use meditation instead of medication, it takes practice to learn the techniques that work for your body in particular, so be patient.

There are several ways you can meditate – listening to music or in silence, burning candles, sitting calmly and allowing your mind to drift, or by the more concentrated practice of yoga meditation. Meditation relieves tension and eases anxiety, which will lead to a more restful and refreshing sleep.

There are several tips to help you reach better results with your meditation. You could try utilizing techniques such as a mantra, which is a positive phrase repeated aloud or in your mind, listening to relaxing CDs, or focusing on deep breathing exercises. When negative thoughts creep into your head and interrupt your meditation, try sweeping them away, making room for positive thoughts.

You can more easily practice meditation techniques when you create an atmosphere that enables you to focus and shut out distractions. Try the following tips.

1. Find a location that’s quiet and where you’re not likely to be interrupted. It could be a secluded room in your home or an isolated nook in the park. Eliminate disturbances such as the TV, phone and similar irritations.

2. Make yourself comfortable. Sit in a position in which you feel relaxed. You can use cushions or pillows if you prefer. Take off your shoes and make sure you are in light, easy flowing clothing instead of something binding and uncomfortable.

3. Now relax. Shut your eyes and allow your thoughts to wander. Picture a calming scene such as a meadow of grazing sheep or a quiet pond to help you concentrate.

4. Take a deep breath. Inhale deeply and rhythmically, while concentrating on the air being drawn in and exiting your body with each breath. Stress relief and increasing your oxygen levels can be achieved by these deep breathing techniques.

Meditation right before bed can improve your sleep patterns and help you to get a good night’s sleep. Even just 10 to 15 minutes per day will help you relax and sleep better.

Meditation – Techniques To Learn

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

When it comes to learning meditation, one requires to learn several important techniques in order to achieve success and obtain maximum benefits. Remember that effective meditation includes a lot of techniques.

The techniques of meditation vary from one culture to other. However, the art of meditation is one. It is universal. These techniques have been developed to suit different personalities.

You would find that certain techniques demand concentration, focus and attention. There are also other techniques that are expansive. ‘Vipassana’ form of meditation is such a technique. It allows one to enjoy free flow of thoughts in conjunction with observation.

Here are some of the most common techniques used in:

a) Mantra meditation:

A mantra can be defined as a grouping of different sound vibrations that have an effect on the physical as well as mental consciousness. Traditionally, these are given to a student by a Teacher or ‘Guru’. However, in the absence of a Guru, the practitioner or the student can opt for his own mantra.

One needs to follow an important rule when selecting a mantra. According to this rule, one must choose a mantra that appeals to the mind fully when spoken verbally. When chanting mantra, powerful vibrations are created. These are said to be directed to the appropriate ‘Chakras’ in order to attract certain divine forces.

This technique works towards healing the physical, spiritual and psychological body of the practitioner. One must fully enjoy the rhythm of the mantra when it is chanted. It is also necessary to surrender oneself to the whole experience.

b) Steady gaze or Trataka:

This is a simple but very beautiful technique of meditation. You need to use a regular candle for this technique. Some people prefer using other objects of their choice. You should set up the candle at an arm’s length. It should be placed in level with eyes.

Perform steady gazing with eyes open first. After a while, you can close your eyes and gaze at the after image of the flame. This should be gazed at the eye brow center. Do not move through out the practice. Now, relax your breath and lengthen and deepen it. Repeat the process for sometime.

c) Chakra meditation:

Charka meditation refers to a simple way for neophytes to explore the charkas via self help. This helps in providing a sense of awakening in them gently. This is done in a balanced integrated manner.

You can perform it either sitting or lying. You need to close your eyes, adjust your body and clothing. Let your breath relax, slow and then deepen. Do not make an attempt to control it. Once you are settled down, begin with Ujjayi pranayam and do this for sometime.

Bring awareness towards the spinal passage. Do it for a few minutes. Ascend with inhalation and descend with exhalation. Try to locate charkas within that channel. Don’t locate the exact location. Only focus in general area. Feel the location of these charkas and repeat its name mentally as you pass by it.

You need to mentally repeat from Mooldhara to Ajna and then reverse the order. Prior to finishing, let go of breath sound and then names. Now, chant mantra ‘Om’ for about three times.

The Best Yoga Mat

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Yoga is an antique philosophy presented in India 5000 years ago. It is designed to stimulate both body and mind but the people who practice yoga in the present day are much more likely to become looking for a way to alleviate the strain that the modern world throws at them on a daily basis. Although many people do dynamic exercise in their yoga sessions some only adopt postures and meditate as well as natural cotton yoga mat is ideal for this. It’s malleable and very lightweight and can be rolled up easily and usually has carrying handles for those who use their health centre or gym for sessions. Certain women have a preference the soft cotton because it is light and washable and takes up little space.

Yoga mats are available in all colors and sizes and manufactured of assorted materials so the yoga mat you choose is almost entirely down to personal choice though if you do hard exercise that involves plenty of sweaty activity then a natural cotton material is clearly not fitting and also a rubber yoga mat that i see more appropriate. It is claimed that yoga is more important than the yoga mat you utilize but people do develop a wierd affection for theirs mainly because it is the first part of the ritual of their yoga session and just picking it up starts the process of relaxation.

Anything that helps to relieve the economy driven stress of today’s culture can only be an excellent thing and it doesn’t matter what you choose to complete whether it be fishing, hunting, or sport provided it is useful to you then it is a positive thing. People may make fun of at someone’s attachment to a yoga mat but is it not the same as having a favorite golf club or fishing reel or any other of the lucky mascots that individuals adopt?

Yoga In Practice: Excuses For Lack Of Practice

Friday, May 28th, 2010

At one time, or another, we all think, “Why am I here?” Sometimes we think, “Why do I even bother?” Thinking about giving up is a temptation for all of humankind, but we continue to pursue our goals just like our ancestors did.

My wife, Marie, puts it bluntly, “You have two choices, push forward or give up.” Sometimes, it is a joy to sit in the back of her Yoga classes, so I can listen to a candid approach to life and teaching Yoga.

Look at how far we have come as a species in regards to Yoga, art, holistic health, medicine, technology, and much more. It is easy to look at the downside of humanity, but a lot of our ancestors did not give up. In fact, they recorded past failures and achievements from which we could learn.

As a Yoga practitioner, or Yoga teacher, you have the
ability to learn a complete health maintenance
system, “loaded with archives.” The archives of Yoga are so plentiful that none of us will be able to study, digest, and practice it all in one lifetime. We know that knowledge is power, and Yoga will improve our lives exponentially.

In getting back to making excuses: Everyone makes them now and then. Some Yoga practitioners have stated they are too old, too stiff, and too weak to continue practicing with intensity. Most Yoga students, interns, and Yoga teachers, will admit to being distracted by life. Sometimes, this is a good thing because your body, or mind, needs a rest, and
a little change is harmless.

However, this is not an endorsement to avoid the benefits of steady Yoga practice. Also, this is not an endorsement to become a “couch potato.” Having worked with Yoga students who have a variety of physical disabilities, Yoga can be practiced on your couch, on the floor, in your bed, or sitting down.

Granted, some of the vigorous styles of Yoga would have to be modified, but there is still no reason to abandon Yoga practice for long. Having seen the improvement of Yoga students in wheelchairs, and hospital beds, there is no reason why the study of Yoga should be, “put on the back burner.”

There is a saying that, “Seeing is believing.” This is true for most of the world, but the evidence of improved health, from steady Yoga practice, is obvious. If you want to worry less, become stronger, become more flexible, or clear your mind, Yoga does all of these things and much more.

There is no excuse for keeping the gift of Yoga to
yourself. If you have seen Yoga improve your life, you are a “witness”, and you have the ability to help others improve their lives. Almost every obstacle that life throws in front of us can be overcome, unless we give up.
