Zen Meditation: An Unique Form Of Meditation

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Zen meditation is a Japanese technique of focusing on a specific thing or thought. The tradition has been passing on from one generation to the other for almost many centuries now. Buddhists used to practice this unique type of meditation. In fact, Zen Buddhists are often referred to as ‘Meditation Buddhists’.

The amount of time devoted by Zen mediators varies widely. Experts recommend a minimum period of about five minutes on a daily basis. This is sufficient for householders to benefit from the immense benefits of Zen meditation.

The main thing one needs to focus on is daily practice. Daily practice of Zen meditation for a small period of time is more than enough to benefit from its effects than spending about half an hour once in a week.

Zen meditation has evolved as a boon to people across the globe who are really stressed out due to the irregularity, chaos and tensions existing in their daily life.

Zen meditation involves sitting in a prescribed position, closing your mind to the thoughts and images for a certain period of time. Here, your heart rate will gradually decrease and breathing becomes shallow. Slowly, you will get in to a state of deep reflective meditation.

With the help of Zen meditation, you can easily create a synergy that would further assist you in connecting to all aspects of your existence such as the body, the soul and the mind. The energy that’s required to strengthen the synergy that you have collected comes from practicing Zen meditation.

When practicing Zen meditation, your mind will only be involved. You will not be engrossing your thoughts in to what happened in the past or what will happen in the future.

You will reach a moment where you will only be reacting to what is happening to you at the present.

Zen meditation is a technique that helps you to awaken your true nature. Here, you don’t need to subscribe any of the religious teaching. You just need to realize that there is a ‘Buddha’ inside you. Awaken the Buddha inside you and you will be able get a deep insight of yourself.

Zen meditation was actually meant to awaken the real person inside you.

A) Here are some of the benefits followed in Zen meditation:

Patanjalis Yoga Sutras

Patanjalis Yoga Sutras is a text that covers many aspects of life, beginning with a code of conduct and ending with the goal of yoga, a vision of ones true Self. The PantajalisYoga Sutras is probably the most authoritative text on yoga. It defines yoga as a focusing of the attention to whatever object is being contemplated to the exclusion of all others. Yoga isnt only about postures, or meditation, it is a way of life, or religion. In this influencing scripture there are eight steps to awakening or enlightenment through yoga. These eight astanga or limbs of yoga are: yamas, niyamas, asanas, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.

The yamas consist of lessons in moral and social conduct in our environment. It teaches us to restrain from lying, stealing, and greed. Non-violence and consideration toward all living things is the key. Communication with sensitivity towards others and moderation in all things we do is revered.

The niyama focuses on attitudes towards ourselves: compromising, cleanliness, serenity, devotion, and asceticism. One should study and reverence to a higher intelligence. There is an acceptance of our limitations in relation to God. It is key to have removed the impurities from the mind and body.

In the asanas, one focuses on posture practice, positioning the body while incorporating the breath to achieve a greater awareness in the mind. One is alert and relaxed without tension, while observing the reactions of the body and breath to various postures. This minimizes the effect of the external influences on the body, such as diet and climate.

Pranayama, or the restraint and control of the breath, helps with concentration, energizing and balancing of the mind and body.

Pratyahara is the relaxation of the senses, where no distractions actually activate the mind.

Dharana, or concentration, is the ability to direct the mind toward a chosen object and focus in on it alone.

Dhyana, or meditation, is the ability to develop focused interactions with what we seek to understand.

Lastly, but most importantly, Samadhi is the ultimate state of Self-realization, or union with the Source.

Meditation Can Lower Your Risk Of A Heart Attack

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the Western world today. There are many lifestyle changes that you can make to lower your risk of heart disease and in this article we will concentrate on one of them – Meditation.

Patients in many hospitals in the UK who have suffered a heart attack receive an after care package. Included in the after care package is information on diet, exercise, and stress. The main way they teach you how to manage stress is by including CDs on mediation and relaxation.

The power of meditation has been clinically proven to reduce blood pressure by as much as 10 points. Furthermore it is claimed that Transcendental Meditation is the most effective form of meditation.

Many of the other benefits of meditation are less easy to measure but never the less, from the anecdotal evidence, there are many benefits both in health as well as spiritual. Some of these include a higher level of contentment and inner peace, improved creativity, improved concentration and improved immune function.

It is easy to make meditation a part of your every day lifestyle and all you need to do is to set aside half an hour a day away from all distractions. To get started go along to your local library and pick up a few books on yoga or meditation. You will also find that there are a lot of websites devoted to the topic of meditation. The main problem you might encounter is that among the few good sites there are a few sites specifically dedicated to lightening your wallet and furnishing you with little information in return.

It is not essential, but it can often help if you choose a mantra as part of your meditation practise. A Mantra is a chant which helps you focus, concentrate and empty the mind. It makes your senses sharper and eases you into a state of deep meditation. An easy way to start is to choose a simple Mantra like the sound “OOOOOOOOOOOOM”, repeated over and over.

The next step in meditation is to find a quiet place to sit, where you will be undisturbed. Sit down either on the floor or a chair try to choose a seated position which allows your spine to be almost straight and erect with your pelvis tilted slightly forward. You may also use a cushion, and sit on the edge of the cushion, tilting your pelvis. Relax each part of your body in turn starting with your toes and working all the way up to your head.

Once you are sitting comfortably, close your eyes, breath deeply allow your diaphragm (tummy) to expand as you inhale, and contract as you exhale. As you do this repeat your Mantra out loud. Continue doing this for a few minutes.

Continue mentally repeating your Mantra and try not to force your concentration on your Mantra. It should come easily and without effort. Soon your mind will become empty

To be really effective you should meditate twice a day, once in the morning before breakfast and in the afternoon before dinner.

Peace be with you and happy meditation.

Yoga Is Fake?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Stop! Stop following others blindly in doing Yoga. Do you know that it may kill you?

It seems to me that Yoga can solve every single health issue. There is no doubt that everybody is doing Yoga these days, and in some places, there even run some Yoga for pets. That sounds a nit ridiculous to me but anything can happens…

This does not surprise me as Yoga does give lots of health benefits. Yoga is considered by a lot of people that gives us the regeneration capabilities to live healthily amidst hectic schedules and bustling environments.

There are truths in all these, only if you understand the dangers and pitfalls of Yoga and the true secrets of learning Yoga in the correct order!

When you hear somebody saying that so and so does the wrong Yoga, it could be true. Right way of learning Yoga energises you and makes you look fresh. Miscarriage can be caused by Yoga if you are not careful

I do not even know who came up with the phrase “no pain no gain”, and being a Yoga teacher myself, that statement does not and should not be applied to Yoga practise. A lot of Yoga teachers are going to tell you that it is perfectly alright to feel pains because you need to practise more? As a matter of fact a real Yogis practitioner, will tell you that there is no such thing as “no pain no gain”. The true essence of Yoga is about reunion with God. That is the truemeaning of Yoga whether you know it or not.

You have to be sensitive enough to your body as when it ask you to stop because of pains, you must to.. Warm-up exercises are a must-do, if you want your body to feel comfortable doing Yoga..There is no point hurting yourself if your body keeps screaming at you that it can no longer take it anymore.

It is even more dangerous to you if you experience illness like insomnia, neck ache, or during your menstruating period. While you are having babies, be careful when you try to do full boat postion. This Yoga Full boat postion requires you to be able to balance on the tripod of your sitting bones and tailbone.

If you suffer from the neck injury, try to stop doing bridge pose for now. Bridge position although calms the brains and rejuvenates tired legs, it requires you to lie on the back of your head on the floor with your chest bending upwards and hence giving a lot of strains on your neck!

When you have the knee injury, be cautious while doing head-to-knee forward bend because you are required to bend your knees while bending forward with your head touching on of your ankles…

Remember alright, Please do not continue if your knees hurt. It means something is not right!

You need to stay away from downward-facing-dog position, when you are in the late stages of pregnancy. Use cautions doing this position when you experience high blood pressure! You are required to come onto the floor on your hands and knees while setting your knees directly below your hips and your hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Moreover you need to Spread your palms, index fingers parallel or slightly turned out, and turn your toes under.

I can tell you that it is not worth it to even try to put yourself and your conceived baby in the dangerous position if you must stop Yoga.

When you suffer from high blood pressure, be careful while doing the tree pose. If you raise your arms above your head it may make your high-blood pressure worse

There are a lot of other pitfalls that I can go on, but the point is Yoga can be dangerousif you do not know the secret! There is always a right and wrong way in doing anything, including Yoga! When you think you know it all, then you might as well stop learning?

The best teacher for any exercise that you do, including Yoga is your body signal!

Yes, Yoga can relieve stress! (That is 100% correct! As we walk the tightrope between modern life and our animal instincts, we human race are desperate to find balance in our daily lives, and also in our bodies, our minds and our environment.

In these modern society, out brain is constantly working, thinking without any rest. Just as what we agreed earlier, a yoga practice is an excellent way to soothe nerves that are in a constant state of panics.

Yoga helps balance out our chronic stress, and thus one must do it!

Yoga help relieve your stress only when you appreciate both the dangerous and beneficial sides of Yoga!

Guided Meditation Vs Unguided Meditation

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The challenge new meditators have when learning meditation is whether to use a guided mediation or to use an unguided meditation. Our objective in this article is to look at both meditation types so that you can choose which meditation style will suit your requirements.

Guided Meditation involves somebody guiding you through the meditation process. That is they literally talk you through the whole meditation process. There are some advantage and disadvantages to this technique. One of the reasons you may consider guided meditation is to help expand your understanding of the various meditation techniques.

The Guided Meditation technique can be presented in a number of ways. You may do a guided meditation session in a small group with a meditation practitioner or you might do a guided meditation session using a meditation cd or meditation dvd.

If you are first starting out, the Guided Meditation sessions is a good way to learn meditation as the meditation practitioner will talk you through the experience and to help you identify what you should be feeling and how to move you into the state that your meditation technique is trying to get you in.

For example if your guided meditation session is teaching you how to master the deep-breath meditation technique then the practitioner will talk you through how to relax and release the tension within your body. They will also be able to tell you what you should be thinking and feeling. A good practitioner will also give you some exercises during the session to try at home that will help your experiment with the meditation technique.

The obvious downside to guided meditation is that someone is actually talking to you during the meditation session. Sometimes what people will find is that it is difficult to get to that state we are trying to achieve when someone is talking during the session. Often what you will have to do is to follow a guided meditation session for a number of times till you can learn and remember the meditation process and then try it for yourself in an unguided meditation session on your own.

Some meditation centres also offer unguided meditation sessions in a group. What this means is that the whole group meditates together but the session is done in silence with no-one speaking. Many group meditation sessions though will still use meditation music as the basis of the session.

Some meditation classes in remote locations will undertake unguided sessions out in the natural surrounding and will use the sounds of nature as the tool to help bring the group to a point of relaxation. Once again though one of the key elements of these unguided sessions is that no-one is allowed to speak during the meditation period. The group leader will generally use a special sound to bring the group meditation session to an end.

Most professional meditation practitioners will recommend that a person who is new to meditation take a guided meditation session so that they can learn how to achieve the state of mind the type of meditation they are trying. Learning to meditate is one of the most important tools any human can master and can help improve your day-to-day life and help you cope with your surroundings.

Once you have undertaken a few guided meditation sessions you will certainly be able to pursue unguided meditation sessions on your own and the more practice you get the better you will be at meditation. It is also worth considering purchasing a few different guided meditation cd’s so that if in the future you are unsure of what to do during the meditation session, you can refer to the meditation cd as a reference.

Prenatal Yoga, An Introduction

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Yoga originated in India more than 5000 years ago. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning union. A regular yoga practice can yield many benefits from increased relaxation to a stronger, more supple body. People who practice regularly also notice that their weight stabilizes.

People often ask if yoga is appropriate during pregnancy. As long as simple precautions and common sense are followed, prenatal yoga is a fantastic way of staying fit during your pregnancy and will help prepare you for labor.

Probably the most important aspect of Yoga is management of the breath. Few us breathe properly today, we are very uptight and constricted as a rule and tend to breathe from our chests. If you look at a sleeping baby, you will see her tummy rise and fall – this is where we have forgotten to breathe from. Yoga breathing fixes this, thereby relieving tension and ensuring that oxygen rich blood is circulating in your body which is obviously very beneficial for your baby. Yoga breathing can also make your labor much more manageable. When my wife was in labor with our daughter, she employed the yoga breathing techniques she learned months before and had the baby without any drugs and without even gas or air.

As with any physical exercise, you need to take general precautions when you are pregnant. Any poses that mean lying on your back for extended periods should be avoided. Unless you are accustomed to inversion postures, you should not practice them while pregnant. Deep forward or back bends may also not be appropriate, as they may put too much strain on the abdominal muscles. As with everything associated with pregnancy, listen to your body at all times and do not push yourself. You should finish a yoga session in a state of deep relaxation, not heading for the freezer to get an ice pack!

As your body changes in each trimester, you will want to adapt your yoga practice accordingly. In the first trimester, it will likely be possible to perform poses that involve deeper stretching. Standing postures are very beneficial as they will strengthen your legs and improve your circulation. Spine twisting postures may also be practiced. In the second and third trimesters you may want to look ato postures that will help open your hips, for example, Triangle Posture. At this point you should take with your back and forward bends. The key is at all times to listen to your body and work with your breath. Once your breathing is out of control while in a posture you are not receiving any benefits. Back off until your breath returns to normal. Yoga is not about how deep you go, someone in the full expression of the posture will be getting just the same benefits as someone who is only in the first 5 percent of a pose but is working up to their limit.

There are lots of resources that can help you embark on a safe prenatal yoga program from DVDs to books to online articles. With their help you can find a practice that is right for you and your baby.

Advantages Of Holistic Meditation

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Alternative methods of ensuring wellness have been around for thousands of years and they have been enjoying a resurgence in recent decades. Holistic meditation, for example, is becoming a favorite among fitness enthusiasts, thanks in part to the increasing popularity of yoga, tai chi and qigong. But what exactly is holistic meditation and what are its benefits? Here are things you need to know:

Holistic meditation
Meditation is an important component of many of the world’s religions and other spiritual disciplines, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Dervish and Asceticism. It is also practiced by followers of the New Age Movement.

The term ‘holistic’ is derived from the Greek word ‘holos’, meaning whole, total or entire. It is the belief that everything involved in a system are part of a whole and that understanding any one part or component requires understanding its relationship to the rest of the components.

Holistic meditation is part of a philosophy that focuses on the view that physical, spiritual and mental aspects should be considered in order to achieve healing and optimum well-being. Only when a balance exists among these three aspects will a person experience ‘wholeness’ and achieve healing through meditation.

Meditation is believed to encourage a strong body-mind connection. By meditating, people become more attuned to their bodies and develop a good understanding of what makes them healthy physically and mentally.

Uses of holistic meditation
Holistic meditation is one of the top approaches recommended by practitioners to people who wish to use it to address a medical, emotional or mental problem. It is a common component of a system of healing used for patient care, particularly because meditation helps reduce stress, increase calmness and encourage people to view things from a different perspective. As a result, they do not easily give in to anger, frustration, jealousy and other negative emotions.

Holistic meditation is also often recommended for people who are physically ill. It is believed that a calm, relaxed mind helps facilitate proper healing. Meditation is also believed to encourage a better mental state, allowing people to relax more and focus less on the negative issues.

Holistic meditation is not a method to treat diseases or conditions of the body or mind. The approach is to take care of all interconnected components involved in the mental, physical and spiritual aspects of a person so as to achieve and maintain good overall health. With holistic meditation, the process of healing does not only focus on the disease or condition but also on the overall wellness of the person.

Holistic meditation has grown in popularity in recent years. Find out what it is and why it works.

Yoga Positions For Beginners

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

If you want to learn the yoga positions for beginners, you can learn it easily at home or at school where yoga is taught. It will be helpful to read these tips before starting.

1. Why not try private lessons? You can book some one-on-one sessions with a teacher in your area. Most yoga instructors offer private classes or can help you design your own program. This is a good way to get started. You can always take group lessons or practice at home after you’ve had private lessons and learned the basics.2. Listen to your body and be aware of your physical abilities. You don’t want to hurt yourself. Make sure the instructor understands your level of experience and any limitations you may have. Don’t allow anyone to push you ahead too quickly. Remember, this is supposed to be fun and relaxing.3. Find a yoga class that best fits your abilities. Talk to prospective teachers, and decide whether of not you can handle a program before you sign up. It’s very important to take it one step at a time. Try a few beginner classes before you attempt more vigorous classes. Don’t move ahead too quickly. Allow your body to adjust to your exercises.

4. If you can’t find a class that meets your needs, you can always practice yoga at home. There are many books, programs, and tapes available to help you get started. Search for the best products on the Internet and read reviews. Talk to others for recommendations.5. Find a yoga buddy. It’s nice to practice with someone and it will help reduce injuries. It’s also a great way to keep up your enthusiasm and interest.6. Eat lightly before practice. Wait at least two hours after meals before yoga class or practice. An empty stomach is best, but don’t let yourself get too hungry to think. You won’t be able to focus on the poses or enjoy yourself during the relaxation or meditation exercises.

A recent study out of Yale University School of Medicine had 33 men and women who practiced yoga at that rate. This lowered their blood pressure and improved their blood vessels’ ability to expand and contract by 17%. Researchers believe the improvements are based on the stress-reducing benefits of yoga.
