Product Description

Yoga instructor Barbara Benagh has practiced and taught yoga for nearly 35 years. She discovered yoga while living in England and began teaching there. She moved to Boston and opened The Yoga Studio on Beacon Hill in 1980.

In addition to her local classes Barbara teaches yoga seminars throughout the US and internationally. She is a regular contributor of articles to Yoga Journal magazine. She has several audio CDs of live classes available as well as DVDs, the latest being Yoga for Beginners released by Body + Soul magazine, and Yoga for Stress Relief that includes a discussion on meditation from the Dalai Lama.

Barbara was kind enough to answer some questions from Amazon.com about this unique line of yoga DVDs.

How are these DVDs different from other yoga DVDs?

I was drawn to working with Bodywisdommedia because they produce DVDs they are interactive. Rather than a "one size fits all" single routine that is typical of most products, these DVDs offer choice, allowing the user to customize and change their yoga practice to suit their needs. No two persons are the same so the ability to change your practice - easing shoulder tension one day and an invigorating morning wake up the next - come as close as possible to allowing you to address your individual needs at home. Not only do people have different physical needs, but they have different time constraints as well. If you have only 20 minutes, there is a practice for you but there are longer practices as well (some as long as 90 minutes) that address the total body/mind connection. The sheer number of yoga sequences offered on each of these DVDs is a first. They are incredibly comprehensive.

How were you able to get the Dalai Lama involved?

This project dovetailed perfectly with the Dalai Lama's message that modern stress is one of the greatest obstacles to our mental happiness and physical wellbeing. Because we are long-time sincere practitioners, having a 30-minute lecture of the Dalai Lama teaching how to meditate on the Yoga for Stress Relief DVD was a perfect fit. Bodywisdommedia also has a broader relationship with the Office of Tibet and are releasing historic lectures with "A Path to Happiness" being the first one.

How will potential buyers of these DVDs know which one is right for them?

The titles are very indicative of what appears on the DVD and therefore a good guide. I really enjoyed making Yoga for Stress Relief because it is incredibly relevant. We strove to make the sequences accessible to as many people as possible, whether they are a beginner or long time practitioner. Yoga for Beginners is a great, non-threatening place to get started and includes lots of sound technique developed over my 30 years as a yoga teacher. Power Yoga for Every Body is a bit more challenging taking you from the beginning level and gradually progressing to much more demanding routines.

Benefits Of Yoga For Athletes

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

More and more athletes are turning to yoga as a supplementary exercise routine to fix the imbalance in their body and to improve their performance in their chosen field of sport. Whether you are a golfer, basketball, tennis, or football player, the mind body connection in yoga is an important element in producing peak performance.

Although proper breathing technique is the foundation of many sports, it is often ignored by many athletes. Yoga will help fix this lack of breathing skill and develop the correct breathing technique that is very much required in any game of sport. The integration of mind and body through correct breathing patterns helps to build stamina and endurance in an athlete. Proper breathing techniques also bring more focus and attention to the mind and sharpens one’s intuition. This gives the athlete an advantage over his rivals.

The various poses in yoga helps to build a strong mid-section and the different types of contractions of these poses and movements act as a form of resistance training to the typical gym-based workouts. But unlike in a gym, you can practice yoga outdoors without having to bring heavy equipment. Imagine doing yoga exercises by a windy beach with the sound of waves in the background, on a hill top with a great view and fresh air, or in a zen garden.

Frequent yoga practice increases flexibility and range of motion and the slow movements is perfect for athletes. Many athletes are already using yoga movements as a warm up and warm down routines in their sport. Athletes in sports field such as tennis and golf will notice improvements in their swing as a result of this flexibility of the muscles and joints. In any given sport, the addition of yoga as a supplementary routine training has been known to improve the performance of the athletes.

Most athletes are involved in some form of weight training and other resistance training that uses repetitive motions that only develop certain muscle groups, while ignoring others. That creates imbalance in the body. Yoga is able to fix this imbalance and help to develop the muscles that have been ignored through the contraction of these muscles in the various poses.

Yoga is also a good workout to relieve boredom in athletes who perform the same types of exercises year in year out by adding variety. It is also an important element in recovering the body from hard aerobic and strength workouts. The numerous poses in yoga can be done in a low or high intensity workout according to the athlete’s needs. Overall, yoga is not only important in bringing in more strength, balance and flexibility to an athlete, but also brings more alertness, attention and focus that is so much needed by athletes in their very competitive world.

Product Description

Anyone wanting to get in shape like the stars need go no further than Bryan Kest's videos. Kest teaches wildly popular yoga classes in Santa Monica, California--so popular that stars like Rhea Perlman, David Duchovny, and Elisabeth Shue willingly sweat alongside the hoi polloi in Kest's packed, ancient loft studio. If you don't happen to be in the neighborhood, not to worry: Kest's yoga videos are nearly as good as being there. Volume 1: Energize is a beginner level class that nonetheless is smartly designed to provide challenges for all levels of users. Kest's Jersey-boy voice at first seems in contrast to the serene environment and inner-peace objectives, but it gradually becomes soothing and hypnotic in its own right. Stretches and strengthening moves are alternated with just enough repose to keep even first timers on track. After mastering Vol. 1, practitioners can go on to Volume 2: Tone or Volume 3: Sweat to further challenge themselves. As long as you keep in mind Kest's personal mantra--"If you're doing the best you can, you're doing this class perfectly"--you and this video should have many satisfying years of workouts together. --Anne Hurley

Yoga On A Nail Mat – What Can It Do For You?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

You can use the Shakti Mat , also called the acupressure mat, to enhance your yoga practice. To do this, you should experiment with your mat to see how it affects your poses, or perform an easy routine to see how it feels.

You may wish to place a thin cloth over the acupressure mat to make some of the poses more comfortable to hold. As you become used to holding poses on the mat, you can perform them directly on the spikes.

Begin with a simple routine, such as the one listed below.

Start with the Tadasana, and balance your weight evenly on the acupressure mat. Inhale, and as you exhale stand up straight with your weight on the balls of your feet. Draw your shoulders back and down as you tuck your pelvis under. Hold the pose for five deep, even breaths before moving into the next pose.

Uttanansana Standing Forward Bend
Inhale the arms up above your head. Exhale and bend forwards from the hips, bringing the hands to the Acupressure mat. Inhale as you look up and lengthen through the spine then exhale your head back down. Remain here for a few breaths then slowly inhale back up to standing.

Now flow into Vrksasana, the Tree. Adjust your left foot on the acupressure mat and slowly, as you inhale, lift your right leg up and brace the foot against your inner left thigh. Or, for those more advanced, you may use a half lotus position. When you have your balance lift your arm above your head as you inhale into a prayer position and focus your gaze on a point of the floor in front of your acupressure mat. Hold this position as long as you wish.

Leave the tree by lowering your arms as you exhale and slowly lower your foot back to the acupressure mat and then repeat the tree while balancing on the other foot.

Pascmottinasana Seated Forward Bend
Sit up tall on your Acupressure mat with the legs straight out in front of you, lengthening the spine. On an exhale, bend forward from the hips, drawing your head towards your legs. Keep the back straight, spine long, Place the hands on the legs or, if you can reach, the feet.

With every exhale you should be stretching your head closer and closer to your knees. You can feel the acupressure mat against the meridians in the back of your legs, increasing your energy as you relax into the pose.

Salabasana, the Locust
On your stomach, stretch your feet out behind you, keeping your back straight, and stretch your hands by your sides. Your chin should be supported on the floor. When you are ready, inhale and lift your feet, chest, chin and arms away from the acupressure mat. Again, hold the pose only as long as you are comfortable, exhaling as you lower yourself back to the mat.

From the Locust position move into the Dhanursana, or Bow Pose. Finish with your favorite spinal twist, followed by a Tadasana, and end with the corpse pose. Relax, and breathe, and mediate until you are finished.

There you have it, a basic 15 minute Yoga routine
to use with your Acupressure mat. How fantastic do you feel after that? The energy is pulsating through your meridians, enlivening and energising your body and mind. Build on this routine by gradually adding in your favourite poses and when you’re ready to increase the intensity of the practice, remove the cloth to perform the poses directly on the spikes. Namaste!

Meditation – Great Reasons To Learn

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Meditation is a unique form of art wherein an individual learns to focus and concentration levels. Most people consider meditation as the best method to transform one’s personality or change one self into a good human.

Some are confused about why they should focus on learning meditation. They are totally unaware of the benefits of meditation.

Here are some top reasons coming straight from the experts in this field to convince you to learn this unique form of art:

a) Minimize stress levels

According to a research performed at the University Of Massachusetts Medical School and research conducted by experts, meditation is capable of transforming brain waves in the autonomic nervous system and amygdala. This provides total control to an individual over fear and stress. Several other studies conducted in this respect have proved that people who spend quality time in meditating are calmer and more relaxed as compared to those who don’t.

b) Happiness guaranteed

In a study, various MRI Scans were conducted on people who meditated for a long time. The results showed that these people possess enhanced activity in the left prefrontal coretex. They also displayed suppressed activity in the right prefrontal coretex. This is a state closely associated with enhanced positive emotions. This ultimately proves that people who mediate are happier.

c) Minimize pain

Several studies have shown that meditation plays a great role in controlling chronic pain. Most of the hospitals use meditation as an integral part of program in order to help patients who have chronic pain.

d) Recover lost memories

When you start learning to meditate, it may take some time for your mind to calm down and adjust to the new activity. One can easily give into distractions when meditating. However, you would feel that during the initial period of adjustment, you would come to know about several long-lost memories.

e) Enlightenment

The traditional Buddhist meditation will ultimately allow you to reach the stage of enlightenment.

f) Personal insight

Another benefit of getting deep into meditation includes an enhanced level of personal insight. You would be able to see your true self. This will be extremely beneficial for you when it comes to transforming your personality into someone who you actually are.

g) Prevent or reverse heart disease

The American Journal of Cardiology has come to a conclusion that meditation may reduce the overall risk of death caused by heart diseases.

h) Solve problems

With mediation it is possible for you to calm down during first few sessions. Novices usually think about the problems they face in their daily life. However, when the mind relaxes, one is able to find out solutions for even the most complicated problems that exist in his or her life.

i) Benefits immune system

Meditation is very important when it comes to enhancing one’s immune system.

j) Enhance intelligence

According to a serious research conducted, it has been proved that people who meditate possess thicker gray matter as compared to those who don’t. This contributes to the intelligence of a person.
